Jim...
By now you have seen the answers and critiques....so I won't belabor all that.
With respect to the so-called, "180 degree rule", while most efficient straight line casting is best done with 180 degrees between the line plane of the back cast and the forward cast, we must remember that there are some situations in which we purposely break it. One example is the steeple cast. Others include the elliptical casts.
With long distance casts, we use what I call Joan Wulff's, "see-saw".....where the caster makes a long back cast with high trajectory followed by a high trajectory forward cast.
That would seem to break the rule.....but it may not, because by the time that long line back cast loop has unrolled and the forward stroke begins, that line has settled down due to gravity so it may well be close to 180 degrees from that of the forward cast.

Hi Gordy,I have been gone for a couple of days so before I look I wanted to give the quiz an attempt.1. Rod plane-the angle of the rod from horizontal to vertical during the cast2. Line plane-the relationship of the position of the fly end portion of the loop to the rod end portion of the loop which should be parallel.3.Casting plane-the plane in which the hand moves during the cast.4. Trajectory-the angle of the cast from back to front or front to back. It should be 180 degrees.5. SLP-straight line path of the rod tip. If it is absolutely straight the line will hit the rod tip.6. RSP-rod stop position, the position where the rod is no longer moving.7. Counterflex-the movement of the rod tip in the direction of the cast after the RSP.8. Rebound-the movement of the rod tip away from the direction of the cast after counterflex has occurred. (I hope I did not get these backwards).9.Inertia-law of physics. Bodies in motion tend to stay in motion and bodies at rest tend to stay at rest unless acted upon by some outside force.10. Tracking-the ability to repeat the same path on backward and forward casts.11. Drift-a continued movement of the rod hand and thus the rod backwards after the stop on the back cast.12. Followthrough-the counterpart of drift but on the forward cast.Now I will go look at the answers.;Jim Penrod----- Original Message -----From: Gordon HillTo: dennisg@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; flysoup@xxxxxxxxxx ; sobbobfish@xxxxxxx ; rtab@xxxxxxx ; CAPTPERMIT@xxxxxxx ; creangler@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; dwright@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; daver@xxxxxxxxxx ; captdoug@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; dsprague01@xxxxxxxxxxx ; ephemera@xxxxxxx ; brushycreekfc@xxxxxxxxx ; barefootj@xxxxxxx ; bradyir@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; flyfishar@xxxxxxxxxxx ; ken.cole@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; captkirk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; glbaggett@xxxxxxxxx ; mkreider1@xxxxxxx ; martyt@xxxxxxxxxx ; niallogan@xxxxxxxxxx ; pminnick@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; bigfly@xxxxxxxxx ; whorwood@xxxxxxxxx ; flycasts@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; sheila@xxxxxxxxxx ; scjacobs@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; cooper@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; tharper@xxxxxxxxxxxCc: mildbill@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; caddis@xxxxxxx ; Brydnlnims@xxxxxxxxxxx ; cezannealexander@xxxxxxxxxxx ; crazycharlie@xxxxxxx ; croberts@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; blacksalmon@xxxxxxxxxxx ; DermSox@xxxxxxx ; gladesflybum@xxxxxxxxx ; gavin@xxxxxxxxxxx ; hillshead@xxxxxxx ; iverson@xxxxxxxxx ; jfs523@xxxxxxxxxxx ; jerry_puckett2001@xxxxxxxxx ; kathleen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; thedamselfly@xxxxxxxxxxx ; plami@xxxxxxxxxxx ; ray@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; kerrrc@xxxxxxxxx ; simbirsw@xxxxxxx ; bobbeanblossomFFF@xxxxxxxxxxx ; hillcathy@xxxxxxx ; dnewpher@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; donjack@xxxxxxxxxxx ; douglas.swift@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; erniemaynard@xxxxxxxxxxx ; flyfsfrank@xxxxxxx ; gregrahe@xxxxxxxxxxx ; hlhpc@xxxxxxx ; jeff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; jhara.carter@xxxxxxxxxxx ; harveyjl@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; t.maltese@xxxxxxxxx ; skifishvail@xxxxxxxx ; jfv@xxxxxxxxxxxx ; trallag@xxxxxxx ; captflyrod@xxxxxxx ; mollysemenik@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; paul@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ; fraudflies@xxxxxxx ; shane@xxxxxxxxx ; snowmonkey29@xxxxxxxSent: Sunday, January 29, 2006 8:02 AMSubject: RE: questionsDennis...
We have noted the same thing.....that many of the MCI candidates are not clear on some of these basic terms.
One of the best ways of getting this across, is to come up with a brief "quiz" which will get us thinking.
Gordy
QUIZ:
Let's see how many of you can come up with descriptions for these terms: (Formal definitions not necessary)
1.) Rod plane.
2.) Line plane.
3.) Casting plane.
4.) Trajectory.
5.) SLP.
6.) RSP.
7.) Counterflex.
8.) Rebound.
9.) Inertia.
10.) Tracking.
11.) Drift.
12.) Followthrough.

Hi GordyThere are 2 terms which seem to be very confusing for MCI candidates. Lets put them out as questionsdefine:1. Rod plane2. Straight line path (SLP) of the rod tipDennis
