    Walter & Group...

    Questions from Ted Warren:

Please help me understand what the real expectation/requirement is regarding  loop size.

Does the 3' loop size apply to all the casts or just those where it is specifically stated?  If not stated in the task or expectation(such as #3,11,12,13,15,16,17,18, ) do the examiners still expect & require all loops to be 3' or less?  If so, is that a fair expectation/requirement since it is beyond what the test states?

If 3' is the expectation of examiners, really an unarticulated requirement, then perhaps it should be clearly stated in the expectations or task.  Or, the examiners should not use it as a requirement if not explicitly stated.

    [GH] Ted,

You are correct in that several of the task expectations do not contain a statement as to loop size.

The preamble to the Master Certified Instructor Performance Test contains this sentence:

"As a guideline, loop sizes are expected to be no larger than approximately 3 feet in height, unless otherwise requested within a task."  That means the 3' loops are not necessarily outside the scope of the test except for the roll cast task, the switch cast and the Spey casts and the accuracy casts. Also, for Task 14 (casting a weighted fly).*

On the latest version of the MCI exam, even the stated expectations with regard to loop size will vary depending on the task.  Examples:

Task 1. (Loop control.):  "..... narrow loops are considered to be approximately 3 feet (.9m) or less in height; wide loops to be approximately 8 feet (2.4m) in height."

Examiners will be especially critical of loops with Task 1.

Task 2. (Casting vertically to horizontally):  "...loop size approximately 3 feet (.9m) or less in height..."

Task 3. (Aerial mends.) The size of the loops is not specified.  (The approximate width of the slack waves is listed.)

    Task 4. (Aerial mends.):  "...loops 3 - 4 feet (.9 - 1.2m) in height.

Task 5. (Curve casts.):  "Well defined loops approximately 3 feet (.9m) or less in height prior to the curve.

Task 6 (Roll cast.): * "The back loop shall not exceed one rod length."  "Consistent loops with the top of the loops no higher than the caster's head."

Tasks 7 - 9. (Switch cast and Spey casts): * The size of the forward loop is not specified.

Task 10. (Accuracy) :* "Consistent narrow loops, front and back. Narrow loops are considered to be d to 4 feet (.9 - 1.2m) in height.

Task 11. (Double hauling.): Loop sizes not specified.

Task 12. (Distance cast.) :  Loop sizes not specified.

Task 13. (Salt water quick cast.) :  Loop sizes not specified.

Task 14. (Casting a weighted fly.) :  Loop size not specified ,,, HOWEVER - general loop size "appropriate" to the task is expected.  "Include the following considerations in the explanation: line pickup, types of casts appropriate, loop size and speed, false casting and shooting line."

Task 15. (Change of direction.) :  Loop sizes not specified.

Task 16. (Casting in wind from different directions.)  Loop sizes not specified.  HOWEVER - Loop sizes in general should be appropriate to the cast made in each particular wind direction.

Task 17. (Loops with parallel legs)  : Loop sizes not specified.

Task 18. (Tailing loops) :  Loop sizes not specified.

    # For both Task 17. and 18., I'd advise making the loops approximately 3' (.9m) except for the demonstrated tails.  For these and other tasks where the size of the loops is not specified, I'd try to do the same.

Task 19. (Casting with the non-dominant hand.) : " First, demonstrate casting in the vertical plane at a distance of approximately 40 feet (12.2m) with loops approximately 3 feet (.9m)."
