    Walter & Group...

Pete Greenan is current chairman of our Master Testing Committee.  He has some up to date information for us:

    Gordy & Group
I fully concur with Joe’s comments.  Often extra questions can take a candidate off point and break his tempo.  Not a good thing.

Let me state first that the current Master’s test will remain as is until 2014.  At the next FF Fair in West Yellowstone we will again demonstrate the tasks trying to show what is acceptable and what is not.  All MCI’s are invited of course.

The MCI committee is considering eliminating redundancies with the CI test thereby very slightly reducing the tasks.  We are not changing the distance cast, the spey casts or mends. We are considering, and probably will, add some fault analysis to the expectations, but not on every task.  These will be left to the lead examiner to choose.

The general feeling of the committee is that Masters should be able to mentor CIs to become better instructors and perfect their casting demonstrations.  Bear in mind that the best teachers in the world are not necessarily the best casters.  This much has been made very clear by Dayle Mazzarella, a most proficient instructor.  We are also targeting continuity in testing so the candidate can have expectations he can live with regardless of who is testing him/her.  Another committee will be giving us input on this soon.

We are also looking at the suggested questions used in the orals.  We feel some are outdated and other questions that reflect changes in current tackle, techniques and tactics would be appropriate.  I would be happy to receive a short list from anyone who has given this a lot of thought.

A third job for us is the Master’s Study Guide.  As good as it is, we believe it should be up-dated.  This job will take some time, but we’re working on it.

One administrative note.  We will most likely be instituting a new cover/reporting sheet for the exam.  I have sent it to the other test committees for editing and comment.  We may all use the same sheet.  It will make it easier for Barbara to keep records.

The test we have now is a good one and the credit goes to Joe & Dusty.  We hope we can maintain the legacy of thoughtful administration of our duties.

    Be well all,
Pete Greenan – Chair, Master’s Test Committee
