    Walter & Group...

[GH]  From Mike Heritage. I have taken the moderator's prerogative in numbering his questions  with corresponding numbering of my answers :

Task 5 is the one I have been waiting for.

1.) Can the overpowering be done off the side or should we be looking at casting loops to the side of a near vertical rod?

2.) When overpowering we will obviously have a bigger counterflex (post loop formation). Does that counterflex mean we have added a mend? Is pullback allowed to accentuate the kick or would that be deemed a mend?

3.) How much of a curve is a curve?

    [GH]  Mike,

I know your questions have been on the minds of many candidates.

Here is the way I've interpreted them :

1.)  For this task, I've been accepting the powered curve done without regard to rod plane (casting plane).  It can be done with a vertical rod plane, but for most casters is performed much more easily with the rod in an off-vertical to off- horizontal plane.

2.)  When the curve cast is completed by counterflex alone, then it is a curve cast.

When you augment counterflex by rod tip movement or by pullback, I'd consider that a cast / mend.  Since mends are disallowed, I cannot pass that one.

Having said that, when fishing I usually do perform it as a cast / mend.... however, that is not the intent of the task.

3.)  How much of a curve is a curve ?  At this point the curve dimensions are not stated, so I can only give you my take.  In my opinion it should be a distinct curve with a layout which would leave no doubt in the mind of a student that it had been accomplished.  I would not pass an "iffy" or "almost" curve which would not be a good teaching demonstration and/or would not be effective in curving about a rock, bush or tree.

Also; I look for a true curve ... not a mend layout.  That includes the fly and leader as part of the curve.  Not a curve in the line with the leader laying out straight beyond it.

In addition, because it is bound to come up :  Some of us can blast a huge overpowered corkscrew curve out to Kingdom Come.  (Jason Borger gets the credit for teaching me that one). While most do it as a cast /mend, there is a method of doing it as a pure cast.   I see this as a highly specialized cast .... NOT required on the exam.  Since this is not one I'd teach to any but very advanced students, I suggest that it not be allowed.  (It has not come up on my exams, since I've not had a candidate who used it.)

I know we'd all be interested in the way Dusty Sprague and Joe Libeu have interpreted this.
