    Walter & Group...

    [GH] From Gary Eaton...

    Gordy,

    A pre-emptive input regarding curve-casts.
    One Governor I encountered expected a "continuous curve from rod-tip to fly" and disallowed a "helicopter delivery" for negative curve cast despite agreeing that it fulfilled the requirements of the test. I found this an area of concern but found no logical outlet for the conflict. So it appears here.

    Other Governors are insistent on a "nearly right angle cast that bends primarily around an imaginary point forty-feet from the caster". This discrepancy with the "continuous curve" expectation arose during a formal MCI prep I co-taught in 2010. needless to say, the paying participants carried away equal frustration. I told them to be "Masterful" and be able to do it both ways. Following that, I instructed in both layouts.

    Obviously a line layout diagram seems a simple solution for the CBOG to endorse and generate.

    More--
    1.   On any performance exam, a broader variety of executable methods for any result works to the candidate's benefit. Just as in fishing, more skills provide more options. Prioritizing according to usefulness, or simple to complex might be wise.

    For CCI hopefuls - three methods for everything is pretty good. For Master candidates, exhaust the options.

    One example -
    Curve casts - single-
    CCI - Hook, reel twist, & underpowered might be enough.
    MCI - the above plus, corkscrew (though really cast-mend), early application of in-the-air mend, V-curves, Tuck cast as a vertical curve, under-slung loop, underpowered tailing loop for a negative curve, and all of the above over the opposite shoulder.
    Fundamental is knowing that a curved ending rod tip path results in a curved line layout. This is a limited sample of ideas.

    2.   FloydDean, MCI from California has a “show” he puts on as an impressive list of named casts. His “Rodeo” cast is a commonly used method for beginners delivering an underpowered, negative curve cast. Floyd's display also generates a plethora of change-of-direction casts.
    I caution candidates not to attempt any maneuver you cannot reliably perform with precision, the first time and every time. You may have heard of more methods to accomplish a task than you can perform.

    IF you cannot perform them perfectly on the first attempt, then DO NOT ATTEMPT THAT METHOD ON YOUR TEST!

    This advice is so solid, that I may place the restrictive "NEVER" attempt . . . in this space.
    Know why to apply a mend or curve, the direction, and how wind and current cause changes to the approach.

    [GH]  Gary,

    I've heard other stories similar to yours.  This is one reason we are hosting this main MCI exam topic !

    One thing I've learned when giving courses or MCI prep events :   It is a good idea to have all the instructors generally on the same page to avoid confusion.

    By the same token, our examiners need to be conversant with the expectations of the exam tasks.

    [GH] From Rick Brown :

    Gordy, (FYI)  in the Sept/Oct issue of ''American Angler'' there is an article on the Sidearm Curve Cast by Macauley Lord.   it includes both the overpowered and underpowered curve. I think that there is good information in the short article plus some good photos.

    [GH]  From Robin Brown:

    I am in the beginning stages of preparing for the MCI.  I have never seen anyone cast an overpowered or underpowered curve cast, so am challenged in creating them.  Can anyone recommend a good video or book with instruction on HOW to create those curve casts?

    [GH]  Robin,

    I'll try to help in our next Group message.

    If you can possibly make it to the Conclave at W. Yellowstone in August, I'd be happy to spend time with you on this.

    Finding a mentor as you prepare for Master Certification is the very best ways to go.  Many Masters are happy to do that.

    [GH]  From Mark Milkovitch :

    Gordy,
    In addition to performing the task, the candidate may be asked to answer questions about it. Whether with this task or another, would you mind giving an example of the range of questions you as an examiner might ask about the task.
    Thanks,
    Mark Milkovich

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [GH] Mark,
    #  During the orals the examiner might include a question or two on how the curve casts work while on the subject of casting mechanics.
    #  During the performance exam :
         1. The fishing uses for the task.
         2. The alternatives, advantages and disadvantages of the basic curve casts.
         3. How to teach curve casts.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [GH]  From Shaun Ash :

    in the shape of the over powered curve does a smooth curve required or is a curve with a ? finish still ok.
    Does the candidate have to do both curves on both sides ?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [GH]  My interpretation :
    The ? shaped layout is OK.  A continuous curve layout OK, too. (Not specified )
    While a Master should be able to do it to each side, this is not included in the wording of Task 5.
    Again, layout diagrams will help a great deal.
    [GH]  From Ckling Ling :
    Hi Gordy,
    Does using the same hand means casting approximately 55 feet of line and leader?
    Thanks
    Ling
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    [GH]  Ling,

    On Task 5, Distance description is limited to, "....with the fly landing approximately 30 feet from the caster".  Line length is not specified.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [GH]  From Andrew Connell :
    Hi Gordy, I'd like to pickup on this one " 2.)  When the curve cast is completed by counterflex alone, then it is a curve cast. When you augment counterflex by rod tip movement or by pullback, I'd consider that a cast / mend.  Since mends are disallowed, I cannot pass that one. Having said that, when fishing I usually do perform it as a cast / mend.... however, that is not the intent of the task."
    Can I start by asking which leg of the line do we "add" the mend too? Rod leg? and a cast is in the Fly leg? What is the roll of the pull back? While I must complete the test to the satisfaction of the tester, I would question that the a pull back of the rod is a mend when its only roll is to accelerate the loop. If you told me it was disallowed because it was deemed a haul I would accept that but how is it a mend? also on the underpowered cast, is slipping line allowed?
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    [GH]  Andrew,

    The mend is made as repositioning the line after the cast.  We do it by altering the rod leg.

    The cast determines what happens to the fly leg.

    "Pull Back" is a term which can be applied to hauls, but in this instance, it was used to mean movement of the rod tip in the direction of counterflex. Used in this context, I'd consider it a mend.

    I would accept slipping line on an underpowered curve cast.  (Not addressed in the task expectations.)

    [GH] From Dusty Sprague :

    Gordy,

    Looking here for distinct curves, easily recognizable by an observer.  I expect to see a curve around a target of some sort approx 30 feet away...I ask candidate to throw the curve around one of the cones I use to mark distances on the test.  I expect to see the leader and some portion of the line curve distinctly around that cone.  I emphasize there to be no accentuating movements - no pull backs.
