    Walter & Group...

[GH]  So far, no one has specifically answered this question which I posed on the Task 12 Discussion 4 message:

"When hosting a Masters exam, I usually ask the candidate to show me how he/she would teach hauling as part of Task 12.  I'll sometimes pose as a "difficult student" who feeds slack into an ill timed haul.

    Question:

BRIEFLY let us know how you would do this if this were an "ex;plain and demonstrate" task.

    Gordy "

Today, Gary Eaton has a detailed response.  Since it is a 3 page long answer, I've placed it in an attachment.

    Now let me ask :

DO ANY OF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT METHOD OF TEACHING THE HAUL ?

    [GH]  From Mike Heritage :

GH]  Gary Eaton leads off with a "hint" for task 12 :

    "Gordy,

In my view, the biggest "hint" on this task is to "drift" into the forward cast as well as the back cast."

I'm not sure about this. There is a risk that a slow forward drift (drag) at the start of the stroke will be seen as creep in some quarters and I wouldn't risk putting myself into a position where I could be accused of creeping during the MCI test.

    [GH]  Mike,

I thought about that as soon as I read it.  Then I figured Gary really meant the word "drift" to mean a smooth start.

    [GH]  From Tim Lawson,

    Gordy,

I have always considered the timing of the haul, i.e., where it occurs within the casting stroke, to be as much style as substance.  As long as the acceleration of the line hand mimics the acceleration of the rod hand, I don’t think it matters where the haul begins.  I agree with Gary that “mirror image” is a tough analogy for a new student of the haul, but in fact, that’s exactly what constitutes an effective haul.

The classic “down-up” pantomime emphasizes moving the hands simultaneously, and I think it’s a lot easier for a beginner to grasp than trying to concentrate on waiting until the rod is fully loaded.  I remember when I first tried to learn the alternative method of timing the haul until maximum rod load, I had a nasty tendency to jerk on the haul, which resulted in a lot of knotted leaders.  I have gotten the same results when trying to teach intermediate casters to wait for road load.  It takes a lot of practice, and in my hands, was more difficult to learn and more difficult to teach a caster with some skills, let alone a beginner.

I don’t think I would ever flunk an MCI candidate on this task based on where within the casting stroke the haul was initiated.  Having said that, I think this task is definitely one that I expect to look “effortless”, so the haul and the stroke have to be “smooth as chocolate”.

    [GH]  Tim,

I agree with respect to the start of the haul.  What is efficient for one caster and one rod and line, will likely be different for another ; especially as casting conditions change.  Even more so as we consider the objectives of the cast.

I suspect that is why the MCI Testing Committee worded the task the way they did:

    "Expectations:  Smooth, consistant hauling........ "

    [GH]  From Troy Miller :

I'll add to the "it depends" legion. To me, every aspect of an effective haul (initiation, intensity, acceleration, cadence, length, ending, timing, etc) is dependent on APPLICATION. I believe every accomplished flycaster will vary his haul as frequently as his casting stroke, i.e. - every forward or back cast. We, as a group seem to be hyper-focused on extreme distance casting and the nuances to achieve ultimate max line speed. Yet 90% of the students I coach merely want to haul efficiently for fishing. WHOLE different cat to skin, IMO...
