    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Mike Heritage :

    My problem with this task is that it seems to infer that creep and insufficient casting arc by themselves cause a concave tip path which will be followed by a tailing loop which just isn't the case.

    [GH]  Mike,

    As you know, the way I see it is that the diminished casting arc for the line carried demands the caster to use force sufficient to keep the line aloft and that is more often than not what leads to a spike of acceleration, ergo the concave tip path and a tail.

    Bruce Richards and, I daresay, others take the position that the concave tip path followed by a tail will result anyway if the arc is sufficiently diminished even if the caster uses smooth acceleration.

    Perhaps he is right.... but to be convinced, I'd like to see it done along with video tracking of the rod tip.  Frankly, I haven't tried to do that.  Perhaps someone has.  I'd be looking for :

    1. Significant narrowing of the casting arc.

    2. No concave rod tip path.

    3. A distinct tailing loop.

    [GH]  Jim Valle suggests a learning exercise.  I hope some of you go out and do this.... and then report back on your results.

    Gordy and Group,

    Re: Tails caused by ill timed hauls

    We teach matching the haul with the stroke for new casters. Since they are learning a new timing issue this makes it a bit easier.

    Personally I like hauling later in the rotational phase of the stroke, I think it is more effective.  I only use this with advanced casters because it takes much more line control and concentration on the timing.

    Now what happens if we begin the stroke with the haul and then add the rod stroke? For Masters Candidates I suggest you go and try this on the casting field…. See what happens …! And figure out ….WHY?

    This little experimentation will definitely help your casting and teaching!

    [GH]  From Richard Ross :

    Hey Gordy,

    Just catching up and got a chuckle from your use of the word "tort". -Richard

    "Even then, the likelihood of a tail will vary a great deal if we further complicate the issue by adding the factor of the degree of tort. "

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [GH]  Richard,     It was shorter than, "faux pas" and just a bit more formal than, "no-no".  Not quite so insulting as "screw-up".  My old PC would have called it, "Fatal Flaw".
