Gary Davison's answer to the weed-on-fly question posed by a student :

A good SHORT ANSWER. Almost certain to yield a request for more information from examiners.

From Craig Buckbee:
Gordy,
there's has got to be a knot out there that allows the tag end to be kept proud, if desired, to act as a guard. perhaps even one that allows for two tag guards. maybe one of the clinch knots tied by doubling-over the tippet and then snipping the tag loop so as to make two 'feeler' guards.
weeds can also be snapped off (left behind) on the back cast just as flies mistakenly are.

Nothing wrong with these comments ...... I don't think Craig was thinking of this as an answer to an oral exam question, however.
As an answer, it suffers on two counts: 1. The first statement is an answer to a different question (one on prevention) .
2. While his second statement is absulutely true, It wouldn't be my first choice for weed removal. (Craig is a well informed experienced fly caster ......I'm sure it wouldn't be his first choice, either.)
(Incidentally, I do use the "two-feeler-guard" stiff mono technique to make some of my flies weed resistant. I tie them as a seperate knot just behind the hook eye.)
