    From Pete Humphreys:

    Hi Gordy,

A good trick Andy Murray showed me to avoid tangles when river wading and shooting lots of line (like working with shooting heads etc), as you strip in to re-cast, make consecutively smaller loops of running line on the water.  If am managing 60+ feet of running line (which we often do when spey casting with short shooting heads) I will make 4 strips then pinch the line between figure and thump, then make 3 strips and repeat the pinch off, then 2 strips, then 1 strip.  This will lay the running line in the current on top of the water in increasing loop sizes and prevents tangles when you shoot the cast.

I 'm sure most already know this technique but thought it may be useful info.  It really works well, especially with the modern "slick shooting" running lines that float.

    Pete,

Apparently one difference between the way you and Ally Gowans manage the line is that he uses a different finger for each loop and you pinch the loops between the thumb and forefinger.  I do it the way you do..... but I have to be careful the line the loops up on my thumb in order so I don't get a tangle on the shoot.

A agree with Ally that a stripping basket can be an annoyance.  When I have one centered over my belt buckle, I tend to shrug my shoulders.  That give me muscular fatigue and sometimes neck pain.  The basket also limits the depth of my wade.

When surf fishing, I place the basket lower and to the line side over my hip.  That helps.

Without a basket, the surf can be a real problem.... especially if there is a, "set" and floating weed.  Letting the line loops tumble in the suds and sand shortens the life of the line finish, too.

In the river when fishing a class I intermediate sink line, I have to make repeated roll casts to get the line up and out for the shoot. Going to a sink tip line with floating running line makes this a lot less of a problem.  The faster the current, the less the problem.

    Gordy
