Thanks ! I fished with Marshall years ago when he was living and guiding at Key West. He's a great fly fisherman. He came here a greenhorn and within 2 years was argueably Key West's best permit guide.
Good stuff on the history behind what we do and what materials were available to us years ago compared with the present. Background information like this gives us an appreciation of what we have now ! Lots on that material in Vol I of Ernie Schweibert's, TROUT.
I remember using, "gut" leader material back in the 1930's and '40s before nylon was invented. Most of it was made from derivitives of the connective tissue in sheep intestines. It was so stiff you couldn't tie it or use it at all until it was well soaked. If you put it away wet, it would rot.
