This helps give a clear picture of what would happen with a so-called, "hard stop". Fortunately that is not what really happens as we cast. When you muffled the stop with your jumper, I suspect you really had rapid deceleration.......and it did the trick.

Hi Server,didn't get the previous message but something that may interest you is a friend of minecreated a crude casting machine, the main part being the most abrupt stop possible.The Rod would rotate until it hit the block then stop dead.The result was that the rod would shudder, bend in many places, and the tipwould move around dramatically creating the most violent wobbly loops imaginable.We fixed this problem by sticking a bit of cushioning (my jumper) betweenthe block and the rod holder. Using this highly innovative method we could formneat loops. From this I would argue that a truly "hard stop" is the last thing youwant to accomplish. It is the hand that cushions the stop.Now a rapid power application, this is something I think we want.Hi Gordy! After reading your message I pulled out a butt section of a rod that has a reel mounted and tried it but kept hitting my hand with the reel. Do you need a butt extension on rod? That's an interesting effect -- if you hit a barrier with the rod butt the barrier does no work, adds no energy. However your body can potentially but more resources into rotating the rod because now you can push against the rod and if you're a gifted athletically rotate the wrist simultaneously. If I learn how to do that cast maybe we'll be able to do it on an instrumented rod some time in the future.Good night - Server
