I?m TOTALLY a practical flyfisher. My very first choice is ALWAYS to move myself to the place where I can make the highest probability shot. I?m assuming that you?re in the best possible position given the conditions.
I just wanted to put that out there for the readership, because sometimes people get SO wrapped up in trying to solve all of angling?s challenges with a ?niftier? cast. Allen and I were fishing in MT five years ago, and he saw first-hand how body position is the most important aspect of trout fishing, with very few exceptions. Allen didn?t catch a fish in an hour or two of fishing, and I think my count was 17 cutts. He couldn?t believe that I was catching fish only two rod lengths out (and it was a 7 foot rod!). There was no way to manage the slack and/or drag with the multiple riffs/rapids if you made a 40 foot cast. Stealth is the most important angler skill to catch fish under ANY conditions. JMHO

Gordy,
Did you sweep the rod tip back toward yourself as the fly line end was entering the leading edge?? Also you could keep the fly line under the index finger of your rod hand and clamp it down after hauling. Then bring the line hand back up the line as the line is flying forward and make another haul in combination with sweeping the rod back. I don't know if I've ever done it or not but it seems like it would be worth a try.
