    Paul...

Well...the angle of the top leg (fly leg) of the loop may be very different from the path of the center of the loop. For example, if I increase my rod arc by placing some convexity to my rod tip path at the start of my stroke then have a good SLP of my tip path with just a slight dip at the end, that results in a high climbing top leg above the trajectory or path of the center of my loop.  This is a practical way of taking advantage of a tail wind.  I use it quite often in casting in the salt.

Just one example of why I wouldn't think it a good idea to use strictly the top (fly) leg to judge trajectory.

I wouldn't choose the bottom leg (rod leg), either......because I can place that convexity of the rod tip path out at the end of my stroke and use it to make a controlled wide loop (such as I might do for casting a weighted permit fly).....so the path of that leg will not be the same as that of the center of the loop.

Judging trajectory by the path of the center of the loop is easy for my thought process.
