Gordie;
One of the most difficult casts, in my opinion, to perform is;
With the rod in the vertical position, cast the loops vertical.
With short casts it is quite simple to do – 30’ and closer.
When you get over 30’, it is difficult to make the fly avoid hitting the tip on the back and front casts.
This is a good practice for building line speed, and holding trajectory.
I find it easier to slightly oval the back cast on longer distance casts.

Exactly so. That is one reason that casters who claim to cast in a strictly vertical rod plane actually change rod planes, however slightly, between the back cast and the forward cast.
Of course there are other reasons, some being relate to style ie. just plain easier for the caster.
As you watch Lefty with his almost horizontal, low elbow style cast, you see that even with the off vertical to horizontal rod plane he changes rod planes from almost horizontal on the back cast to off vertical for the forward cast for many of his, "default" casts.
Another way to look at it is to realize that most of our distance casts are slightly elliptical casts !
