    From ol Al:-

Style: The physical movements used to achieve the mechanics of the fly cast. If the mechanics are preformed so that the fly hits the target the style is workable. These are effected by the casters physical size, shape, ability and physical limitations. Conditions fly size type. line type. any or all of the above conditions are changeable. The area and conditions of the day. Sitting, wading deep or shallow. kayaking.  The style will change.

Elbow styles. Low elbow; use with side arm casting keeping the elbow low.
Swing or free elbow: elbow swings forward and back in side arm cast to give more stoke length.
Tight elbow; keeping the elbow touching the side or ribs.
High elbow; Elbow held out and up. Casting off shoulder. physical slack line cast.
High elbow with forearm held high; at 90 degrees to upper arm like a baseball pitcher
Elbow first; Used to pull the line. Dropping the elbow to remove slack and add stroke.
Elbow cross body; forearm crossing the upper body.
Extended Elbow: Drifting back or reaching to extend the stroke.
Lifted elbow; used to high stick or drift a nymph in the feeding lane.

Default Style. The way the caster returns to the most. His most comfortable position.

My Home waters would be small creeks, Texas Rivers & Lakes, taking bass, and brim. 5 wt with a popper.
Trips to Texas Coast Saltwater Flats fishing wading or kayaking. 8 and 9 wts.
Trips to trout rivers Arkansas rivers. White and Norfork for big brown trout. 3 - 7 wts.

My Styles will change with area fished, trees, Flowing water, distance needed to cast. sinking lines shooting heads. Wind direction and strength, Weight of Weight of rod and fly will all change my style.

Good Styles; I would say that you have to have good stroke length for the line out.
Effects of wind use to help make the cast.
Able to control the slack after the cast.
Stealth when needed. Distance when required
All styles must maintain control of the rod, loop, line. and fly with out over tiring.

Style: is how you perform the Substance or mechanics of the cast.

The default style or the way they might demo a cast.
A] Joan; is know for a vertical style with Wristing at the end of the stroke. Loading move Power snap.
              B] Jerry Seim;
C] Bruce Richards; vertical casting with his looking backward  by leaning Upper body backwards on the
back Cast with feet somewhat square. Right might be just a little back. high Elbow forward
D] Ed Jaworowski; Sidearm with rod leg back Low elbow.
E}  Lefty Kreh; low elbow Belly swing wish I could cast like him.
             F}  Harro.
G] Mark Serengeti (sp?)  Backcast delivery with full body involvement. Big flies an long ways.

The style is yours to develop with all the essentials of good casting mechanics included.

    ol Al...

Good answers...so I chose yours to send out.

    A couple of comments:

1.) His name is Mark Sedotti (From Conn.)

2.) Bruce Richards' style:  Vertical to off vertical rod plane, elbow out to the side, rotates at the shoulder.
(You see, he has done a lot of float-tube fishing.  This style also lends itself to fishing while chest deep with full waders.....you couldn't use Lefty's default style if you tried under those conditions.)

3.) Joan Wulff's style, is really vertical to off vertical rod plane, elbow forward, wrist straight at the end of the forward cast; wrist cocked back so the butt of the rod is 45 degrees from the forearm at the conclusion of the back stroke.  (Many of us use the term, "wristing" to describe an out of control wrist....and Joan is anything BUT out of control !)

4.) Lefty's style is : Low elbow, off vertical rod plane, change of rod plane more than with most casters between the back cast and the forward presentation.

5.) Jerry Seim's style:  Vertical rod plane, elbow forward.

6.) Harro (Rod Harrison) :  An even more horizontal rod plane, low elbow than Lefty

7.) Ed Jaworowski:  (Same as Lefty).

To me, a, "good" style is one which is comfortable, non fatigueing and easy for the caster, makes good use of his/her anatomy, is sometimes dictated by the fishing conditions; but in any case must suit these conditions, and doesn't violate the essentials of casting unless it is necessary to modify one or two of them to make the presentation.
