  • FW: Starting with a pile of line

    Howdy Dan
I like your idea. I use a sideway loop to get the line out of the rod tip. then a roll type cast to get the line straight in front. I can see the advantage of your Casting Tip. Thanks

    Hi Gordy

The "pile of line" out front of a student is something I address in my beginners  class. Before we even start on any overhead casting, I  ask them to strip off line (about 4 long pulls) and then take about two or three steps back. I then demonstrate a sort of switch cast where a loop is formed to the back and they can then bring the rod forward to straighten the line out. We talk about this as removing the slack line. After they have mastered this I start them on the "pick-up/back cast and forward cast drills.
Over the years, this has reduced a lot of frustration on the students part (and my part) by having them start out with the slack removed.

    Dan & Group....

Here is a simple (or NOT so simple) question. (Got this one from Jim Valle):-

Question: You are teaching a beginning student and note that he has shaken out a whole pile of line right out in front of him.  What do you do, now ?
