[GH] I placed a message on mechanics/physics of fly casting from Ally Gowans in an attachment.

[GH] Here are a few responses to our faulty distance cast message. As we progress, my comments to each message will contain ever more information as to what I observed :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[GH] From Jim Bass:
Gordy one of the problems could be adding too much power at the wrong time and not keeping it smooth. He may be not adjusting his haul to the difference in amount of line he is trying to carry.
I would the six steps
1. Line
2. Rod
3. Body
4. Body
5. Rod
6. Line
Help him see the faults and make adjustments. Best Jim
Jim Bass
Jim,
Good thoughts.
He did add more power than needed.
His timing on the back cast did suffer.
The haul length was appropriate to the line carried. His haul speed, however, was about the same as it was for his successful 70' - 75' casts.
Once our diagnosis is complete, the 6 step method can be applied for most of the corrections needed.
[GH] Len anderson replies:
1. The backcast not unrolled enough before starting forward cast, timing a little off, causing slack.
2, Given the candidate could cast the 70 - 75' cast easily, I would look for something like creep when starting the forward cast, I would take a look at the amount of pause on each stroke, look at haul length and where the stop is happening on the forward cast.
[GH] Len,
The back cast timing (as stated above) was just a little bit off, in that the loop had not quite fully unrolled, so his pause should have been a little longer before starting the forward stroke. HOWEVER, when I suggested that he pause a bit longer, the line ticked the ground as he began his forward cast.
I did not identify creep.
I judged his haul length to be OK.
I didn't see a problem with his stop sequence on the forward cast.
[GH] Good question from Judy Graham:
I need more information. What did his loops in the back cast look like in the 85' cast?
Judy Graham
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[GH] Judy,
As he continued to false cast, just prior to his delivery, the back cast loops opened up more and more. Tracking on the last 2 back casts was poor.
The loop on his delivery cast was much larger than it had been on the shorter false casts.

[GH] From Andrew Parker :
Gordy,
At 70'-75', what was his carry and what his shoot? Do we know anything about the line he was using: DT, WF, and if WF the head-length?
Thanks, Andrew
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[GH] Andrew,
'
He was carrying almost 50' of line on his good 70'-75' casts.
The line was a WF 7 F Scientific Anglers Expert Distance line matched to a 7 wt. fast action 9' rod. (Head length over 55')
Leader was 8' long, fast taper.
Fly was a 1" piece of yarn. No hook.
[GH] From Bob Stouffer :
QUESTIONS :
1. Briefly describe one or more of the problems which you think may be going on here.
Without seeing the caster perform, I would suggest looking for an over-abundance of casting hand applied force and the use of the same haul applied at 75 feet.
2. Let us know your way of tackling the problem (or problems)
a. Watch the caster closely at both 75 and 85 feet
b. suggest that the caster not change the amout of force in the rod hand
c. suggest that the caster increase the force and length applied to the haul.
d. see if the suggestions are followed and if they make a difference in the line layout.
Bob Stouffer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[GH] Bob,
1. YES. Those were two of his problems.
2. a. - d. I did all of those things and it helped to a reasonable degree, but didn't perfect his cast even though it did result in his reaching the 85' mark more often.
Good calls !
WE ARE GETTING CLOSE.
