[GH] From Phil Gay:
Gordy,
I tried Paul's cast on the river yesterday. It was doable for sure. However Ally's idea of making an off shoulder cast is likely easier to teach and demonstrate.

[GH] I got it to work OK, too. (If I'm really doing it the way he does).
The "off the opposite shoulder" roll cast is what I usually use. One problem with that one appears when you try to do it with a strong wind coming on to that side. Not good any time you have to place your D-loop on the windy side.

[GH] Ally Gowans joins the rest of us in making a retraction of a little, "OOPS" :
Hi Gordy,
Oops! I meant to say” I should add that for these casts I wouldn’t use a “dead line” roll cast, in fact during practical fishing I almost never use a dead line roll cast”. I learn to pause for a wee ‘t’ like my wife does!
Best regards,
Ally Gowans

[GH] Ally,
As I think about it, I can come with a reason or two for using a dead line roll cast for other situations -
1. When "at the ready" to make a quick roll presentation to a rise or approaching fish.
2. Same thing when awaiting a lull between wind gusts or (in the salt) the perfect wave.
3. When demonstrating a ROLL CAST SET-UP to students.
4. I've seen competition accuracy casters do that for roll cast events. Sort of the way a golfer does it as he hesitates before making the "winning putt".
I'm sure there are more...........

[GH] From Paul Bourcq :

[GH] Paul,
Several ways of getting that loop.
I can get that reversed loop plane by supinating my wrist as I make a sidearm roll cast delivery.*
* Pronated wrist = wrist rotated so palm is facing downward.
Supinated wrist = wrist rotated so palm is facing upward.
