    Walter & Group...

[GH]    We have three questions "launched" to our Group.  Answering burning questions from our members is, I think, one of our greatest responsibilities as we teach one another.

A question from Tim Lawson :

    Hi Gordy,

This is a really timely topic for me, because several of us were discussing definitions while we were conducting CI certification exams this past weekend.

I would like the answer(s) you would accept from a CI candidate during a certification exam if you asked for a definition/explanation of “stroke length” and “rod arc (angle)”.

One of the most frequent stumbling blocks on the exam is the task of “explain and demonstrate the relationship between changes in casting distance and changes in the casting stroke”.  Most candidates can “parrot” back the “Short cast, short stroke.  Long cast, long stroke” answer, and can even demonstrate how the rod moves farther on a long cast than a short one, but few really understand the mechanics of what’s happening……and why.

    Thanks

    Tim

[GH]  Tim's question is right in line with the discussions we've had during the past few weeks.

Let's see how some of you would answer him.  As you do this, remember that this is a question on the CCI exam, NOT the Masters exam.

    INSTRUCTING ABILITY :

    21. Explain and demonstrate the casting stroke as it relates to changes in distance.

Comments: (communication effectiveness, movement analysis, changes in stroke, error recognition, teaching fundamentals, loop size, casting angle, analogies, student involvement, line, rod, body, stroke length to line length.)

    Pass  _______        Fail _______

[GH]  Question from Marc Fauvet :

    Hi Gordy and Group !
I've been rolling this question around in my head for a while and was wondering if i could get a few replies on this:
We all know they ideally work as a group but among the Five Essentials which one (if any) would you consider the most important and why ?
    Cheers,
    Marc Fauvet

[GH] Question on DAMPING from Michael Heritage :
Sound job Mac, the only one I find any real issue with is
Damping Action-  A term that refers to how quickly a rod recovers to a resting position at the end of rod motion. Rods that dampen quickly are generally more desirable (also referred to as dampen).

That definition would be to do with the rods frequency. I have always understood the term damping to be something the caster does (relax the grip, for instance) that dampens out any frequency occillation that may send secondary waves down the rod leg.

One or two of the others I will have to get the dictionary out to fully understand, but thats not your fault.
