    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Rich Kovars:

    Gordy,

I'll chime in on visualization as well.  It is a very effective technique when used sparingly (i.e. the visualizations aren't too complex).  When I have a student that is having a very difficult time making the rear stop on the backcast I sometimes ask them to visualize in their mind that they want to throw the line straight up.  This causes the student to try to stop the rod directly overhead which most cannot do.  The stop ends up in exactly the right position for the backcast.

Just another tool for the box.

    [GH]  My conclusions:

    #  All instructors who replied to the questions on visualization used it.  (Despite a repeated request to have those who never used it respond, none of our 299 members did so.)

    #  None stated that it was of little or no use.

    #  Each  had different visualization techniques to offer.

    #  Some students will have a greater capacity to visualize than others.

    #  Instructors of other sports (such as golf) also use visualization for their teaching.

    #  If the student is asked to visualize too many things at one time, the results may not be as satisfactory as when less complicated imagery is used.

    #  Basing an entire workshop on visualization is not a good idea. (My own experience with one Conclave workshop suggests this.)

    [GH]  From Jim Bass :

Gordy thanks to all who have responded to my four questions.  I know I will be using visualization in many ways.  The group has given me much food for thought.  Please thank them all.

    Best Regards Jim
