    Walter & Group...

[GH] Clarifications from two of our BOG"s :

     From Phil Gay :

    Gordy,

The intent of this cast is use your dominant casting arm and demo your ability to cast over your opposite shoulder.

     From Dusty Sprague :

    Gordy,

As you note, we intend this part of the task to be casting across the body with the same hand used in the first part of the task.  Working down from vertical to horizontal, across the body, at some point, moves from 'off shoulder' to angles much greater than off shoulder.....horizontal.....thus across the body.   While tilting the body will work for the near vertical casts, tilting the body won't work for the nearer-horizontal casts we also expect.  Many of us change our stance to facilitate a longer casting stroke as we cast across the body.

We have no set height above the ground for the horizontal casts.....horizontal.  I sometimes ask candidates to 'make them lower'.  This should not be not problem for the candidate.

Slightly climbing casts would be fine for me.

Many of these questions are answered for candidates as they do a practice-test with an examiner.....not to say our expectations on the test itself should not be clear.

    Dusty

    [GH]  From Jim Laing :

    Gordy,

17 questions?  This could be because pages 137 & 138 are missing from Joan Wulff's "Fly Casting Techniques" (at least mine).  Did Joan deliberately leave out the section on "Backhanded Casting" to add some mystery to task #2?

I believe there are several other references to "backhanded casting" in the study materials.  If there was some reference to backhanded casting, the intent of this task would be clear.

    [GH]  Jim,

Beg, borrow, buy or steal another copy.

Pp. 137 & 138 are alive and well in my copy.  Sketches A. & B. tell the story well. *

Casting on the opposite side using the primary arm can be done either cross body OR cross head.  Joan shows both methods while stating a preference for the latter.

I find that when I need to increase my stroke length and casting arc for longer casts, that casting over head works better.

Published in '87, Joan's book was written well before the birth of the present MCI exam.

Joan is not one to obscure anything as she teaches and writes !

    [GH]  From Bill Kiester :

    Gordy,

This task is right out of Joan Wulff's video "Dynamics of Fly Casting" watch it if you want to see how it is done.  Also watch the video for the take 1 "no haul" when Joan is casting to targets.  Looks awkward to me.

    [GH]  From Shaun Ash :

Gordy with this task I have learnt to move my feet, feet together on the straight overhead right foot back as I drop down  to horizontal side cast with a lot more body movement to maintain the loop then back up and this swap to right foot forward as I cast off shoulder.

Question with the two false casts I go to vertical casting twice I start there and then go there again as I move off shoulder do both times have to have two false casts .

    [GH]  Shaun,

    My interpretation :

Start with the vertical cast, go down on the dominant side, then back up to vertical; make two more vertical casts and then start down on the other (opposite shoulder) side.
