[GH]  More on hovering by Jim Valle :

    Gordy and Group,

Although I would love to take some of  the credit for the hovering… this happened on the Friday  of last year’s Conclave and it was actually Chase Jablonski who was running the show and introduced the hovering method we are talking about. When Gordy joined us…  I was simply standing there recovering from just passing my THCI so I was pretty much numb… trying to learn from Chase, I too was just blown away by  how long Chase could hover that thing. Chase is a better caster than I will ever be and he had has volunteered again this year to run Fridays Rendezvous, so if you want to see it and learn it …Chase is the man to see. He will certainly also be there doing his version of false casting an entire line… it is more than amazing… my only defense for not being able to do this cast is “that’s not a fishing cast….” Although he informs me it is … (maybe I should say “it will never be one of my fishing casts”),  but Chase is also much taller that I am… .

I will be managing the Rendezvous on Thursday and I am sure I will be there Friday also learning from Chase. If you are attending the Conclave stop by either day You never know who will be dropping in at a Rendezvous but you will always learn something. Every CI and MCI is invited to come and watch, learn or teach with us. Lots of good experience!

There is nothing like a Conclave!

    All the Best,
    Jim

[GH]  Right you are.  Chase does that exaggerated hover just as Joan Wulff does it.  Great teaching ploy, because he can do it so slowly and dramatically that any student can digest and understand the moves.

We'll give Chase the credit for teaching the hover.

I showed my vertical upward curve cast for delaying the drop of a weighted bonefish fly, but time didn't permit going into the details.  I recall that we did demo that one during our salt water fishing workshop.  That one isn't really an eye opener when using a hookless yarn fluff.... it really gets attention when it is demo'd with a heavily weighted fly, because it "appears" to defy gravity.

You get credit for coming up with the Casting Rendezvous in the first place.

Chase's distance casting style differs from any other I've seen in that he changes his hand grip during "hang time"... one grip for the back cast and an entirely different one for the delivery cast.  It is done so soothly that it doesn't alter rod motion one bit.

    [GH]  From Michael Jones :

In bass fishing, presenting a fly deep under an overhang to a bank, I refer to this cast as an inverted tuck cast.  We sometimes 'skip' the fly off the surface to do it.
