[GH]  Back track to Task 12 for a moment.

We'll return to Task 13 with our next message.

[GH]  An effective haul teaching method from Dave Jacobson :

    Dear Gordy and group,

    Great discussion.

I may have missed it in earlier responses, but I have used a very kinesthetic approach with more challenging haul students.

The student and I stand facing each other. I ask the student to false cast comfortably. I , being slightly off to the opposite side of the casting arm, then ask the student if I may grip their line hand (which is is holding the line.) I then ask the student to close their eyes, and let me guide/move their line hand. Based on the rhythm/pace of their false casting, I will move the students line hand to complete a haul. After going through several cycles of eyes closed, instructor assisted hauls, I slowly decrease the amount of force and guidance of my hand...to the point where the student is fully controlling their line hand movements. The student hauls

Sometimes it is a meager start......but this method has proven to be another great tool.

    Thanks Gordy

    [GH]  Dave,

I have tried that method and found that is is one more effective teaching method which works for some students.  One drawback that I found is that there are some, "touch-me-not" folks who respond negatively to even hand touching.  For that reason, I started using an alternative method of having the caster make the cast while the instructor makes the haul..... then switch roles.  Not quite as effective as the hand-on-hand approach you describe, but OK even for sensitive folks.

[GH]  Joe Libeu and I had a phone discussion a few minutes ago.  We both agree that a point of clarification is needed on the "mirror image " concept of matching the haul to the cast.

As with many other word pictures that we use to teach, this is only a rough approximation of what really happens.... a less than accurate point.

As we've seen, many instructors don't like it and don't use it.  Many others do.  My point is that it works for some of us when teaching new haulers, but falls far short of the mark when discussing casting mechanics at a higher level.
