Walter & Group...
[GH] We'll now move on to Task 16.
Task 16. Explain and demonstrate change-of-direction casts, e.g., from a downstream position to an upstream position.
Expectations: The demonstration should include a minimum of two different casts, to change direction fromm left to right and from right to left. The change of direction should be significant - 45 degrees or more. False casting to achieve change of direction is acceptable as one of the two different casts to be demonstrated. The candidate should explain why the demonstrated casts were used and their advantages and disadvantages. The demonstration must match the explanation and be focused at the student level.
Passed (___)
Failed (___)
(___) Explanation unclear or incomplete.
(___) Explanation did not match demonstration.
(___) Change of direction less than 45 degrees.
(___) Poor loop control and/or tailing loops.

[GH] A competent Master candidate really should be able to come up with at least 8 different methods of making change of direction casts.
One suggestion: I'd consider starting with the way a neophyte fly fisher usually does it ... Turning from one position to another a little at a time while making numerous false casts, finally presenting to the new position at an angle with respect to the starting direction. The advantages and disadvantages of that method are briefly noted, and then on to more sophisticated methods of making the change of direction casts.
When practicing for this task, it's a good idea to make out a "flash card" with a list of the various change of direction casts you wish to present .... including several others in case you are asked for more in followup. Practice with this card will serve as a "memory crutch" until used so often that it is no longer needed.
Be certain that you know the fishing conditions best served by each of these methods.
The candidate should also be prepared to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
Also, you must be able to have a competent method of teaching each one.
Come forth with your comments, suggestions, and concerns.
