    Walter & Group....

    From Tim Lawson:

    Gordy,

Dan’s definitions are confusing to me.  I would define the two terms exactly the opposite.

How MUCH it bends, and consequently, how FAST it returns to RSP after counterflex, is what I would define as rod speed.

WHERE it bends (tip, mid, full) is what I see as rod action.

You bring up a couple of points which won't die on the vine as I expect other comments to come in.

For one thing, the degree to which the rod or rod segment bends under load may actually be less important than how fast it returns from that bend as we consider rod "speed".  Putting it another way, if it returns slowly, it simply isn't "fast".

Troy had pointed out that another thing that a fly rod can do in addition to the classic answer, "STRAIGHTEN" , is that it can resist being bent.  I suspect that the degree to which it does so may turn out to be directly proportional to its speed of recovery from the flexed position.

Also, the degree to which the rod bends under a given load may or may not turn out to be inversely proportional to its speed of recovery.  I stand to learn.

Excerpt from a personal message by Troy Miller :

"......I have to roll Dan's simple definitions around in my cranial blender for a while. I think he may have them backwards. "

[GH]  Knowing Dan's wonderfully unique sense of humor, I suspected he did that purposely to see if we'd take the bait.  If so, it would be a new teaching tool !

[GH]  Comments by Gary Davison :

    Gordy,

Thanks for getting some of Troy's e-mails concerning the personality of rods.  I enjoy his take on the subjects.

It's refreshing to know that each rod has it's own characteristics when loaded or self loaded as Troy provides.  Makes for an interesting world!

The critical point (as the caster) of it all is to be able to know what we have experienced, and it is apparent that Troy has achieved that!

[GH]  Gary....  well, your comments encourage me to send more of Troy's message sent this afternoon.  Fits right in with your observations.  He comments on my sharing some of his prior writings :

" How absolutely POETIC. Sometimes I read my old writing and just laugh. Like young Norman, I've learned to exercise thrift - but without the guidance of the good Reverend...

Actually, the first posting that I submitted which described progressive vs parabolic actions is more useful toward a basic understanding for most people. That is what I was thanking you for - your approval of the first message...

I was just sent a new Hardy rod by one of my friends/former students. Wonderful, thoughtful gift. It's a 7' 3-wt made of 95% glass and 5% carbon. It's called the "Stream", and without line strung, it self-loads VERY sweetly.

I can't wait to string it up and savor those first moments dancing with her.
