    Hi Gordy ?

    Couple questions:

    Question #5  --  Is there a reason you don?t use a perfection loop in the end of your nylon to loop your tippet to?  That?s all I?ve used, and it seems to hold up very well and does not cause an off-center kick in the leader like asymmetric knots.

    I agree on all counts.  The perfection loop is hard to beat.  I don't use it for a loop at the end of the heavy butt section for salt water leaders only because it tends to stand proud when used for that loop-to-loop connection.  I have no objection to using it for the loop-to-loop attachment between the end of the tapered section and the tippet. Both the perfection loop and the uni loop (Duncan) pull straight from the center of the knot.

     I use the uni most often even though it isn't quite as strong as the perfection loop because its easier to tie in poor light conditions or when I'm in my skiff and it is windy and rough.  I'll use either when rigging at the bench..... though I favor the perfection loop.

    There is the theoretical disadvantage that the uni loop might slip down tight as the angler puts pressure on the fish.  That can and does happen when this knot is used to attach the tippet to the hook. I have not had this occur when the uni is drawn down properly for use on the leader connections either for the connection between the butt section and a fly line end loop or when used for the connection between the tapered section of the leader and the tippet.  G.

    Question #10 ? Did anyone mention a furled leader for fishing small creeks where you may have little to no flyline out of the rod?  They really are the cat?s meow for those applications.  They can also be great for spring creek fishing, providing you use adequate length of tippet sections.  If you use a relatively neutral color thread on your furl, it rarely puts the fish off ? and I feel like the effective turnover (lack of memory) and reduced drag more than makes up for visibility issues?

    Some did. (When I get scores of answer sheets, I can't send all of them).  The furled leader is a great choice when used for that purpose.     G.

                                                              PICK-UP & LAY DOWN

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here are 20 questions on the technique of PICK-UP & LAY DOWN ..
    Start with a SHORT ANSWER.  Add a LONG ANSWER when needed or when asked to describe. :
    1.)  Briefly descibe this maneuver in your own words.
    2.)  Do you use this technique when teaching new casters ?
    3.)  Why do you think it is important enough to use for new casters ?
    4.)  If you do NOT use it, tell us your reason (s).
    5.)  Would you ever use it when teaching intermediate or advance casting students ?  List examples, if so.
    6.)  What do you see as the most common fault when students do the pick-up and lay down ?
    7.)  How do you correct this ?
    8.)  What do you find as the second most common fault ?
    9.)  How do you correct this one ?
    10.) Can you think of other faults likely to appear ?  List them.
    11.)  Where do you prefer your student's rod tip to be at the start of the pick-up and lay down maneuver ?
    12.)  Why ?
    13.)  Where in the fly casting literature can you find a detailed description of the pick-up & lay down cast ?
    14.)  Ally Gowans has stated that the caster must get the line ORGANIZED before making a pickup.  What do you think he means by this ?
    15.) Lefty Kreh writes that there is something the caster must do prior to making the actual pickup.  What is that ?
    16.)  Given the choice, would you prefer to teach this maneuver to your students on grass, in a gymnasium (with no wind) or on water ?
    17.)  Why ?
    18.)  You are teaching this cast with a 10 mile per hour wind.  What do you feel is the best way to position you student with respect to this breeze ?
    19.)  Describe the ideal line plane (trajectory / launch angle) for this task.
    20.)  Why ?
