  • Another elbow style ?

    Walter & Group...

Last week we were talking on Style Al Kyte in his  book "Guide to Better Fly Casting a Problem- Solving Approach" covered Elbow postions:
     Elbow -Forward Style,
    Elbow-up-to -the-side Style
    Low. Elbow Style.

We need to add one more  I would call it Elbow Down.
This is the Elbow at the side Casting with a stiff wrist, As we were taught years ago. This style is still a very good way to cast a slow paraballic rod.
So I would say this was also a STYLE.

Al ....    This was an old fashion way of fly casting.  Some instructors placed a book under the elbow to keep it down and firmly at the caster's side.  Many taught timing by cadence using a metronome.  Unfortunately, the metronome method had the caster using the same timed pause for the back cast and forward cast even when the length of line carried was changed !

I recall that this was the kind of instruction the father gave to his sons in the movie, A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.

Frankly, I had not thought of it as a viable casting style for present day casters, since we now teach various styles with the elbow freed up (mobile).
