Spey Casting Instruction Techniques for the Certified
Casting Instructor
(This session will help you make decisions about which
tools to use, what
methods and style, along with where and why to give your
instruction)
Dennis Grant-- Up in Nova Scotia Dennis heads
up Atlantic Canada's #1 Fly
Fishing School with a staff of a Master Casting
Instructor and five CCI's.
They run 12 scheduled schools in season and do a
host of other special
casting events and exhibitions. He is on the pro staff
for G Loomis rods, 3M
Scientific Angler lines and reels, Air Flo lines, Billy
Pate reels and Hardy
Fly Fishing tackle. Dennis is a Certified Two Handed
Casting Instructor, a
Master Fly Casting Instructor and serves on the FFF
Casting Board of
Governors'
Topher
Browne-- a Master Casting Instructor who co-wrote and co-produced the
popular
spey casting DVD entitled "Spey to Z". He is a feature writer for
the
Atlantic Salmon Journal and regularly offers individual instruction in
TH
casting. He is a recognized authority on Salmon angling and the
boards
for his new book on Atlantic Salmon are at the publisher.
Topher's Spey
Schools on the salmon rivers in Canada are unique. His
instruction
techniques are noteworthy and highly
transferable.
Direct Instruction: A New Paradigm for
Teaching Casting
(In a time-limited world, Direct Instruction is the most
effective way to
teach almost anything. In fly casting a Direct Instructor
tells students
exactly what he wants them to do with their hand/arm/body/rod.
What he does
not do is help them "think about" or "understand' the cast
because for the
vast majority of students, doing so actually delays their
ability to
cast
well)
Macauley Lord - before passing the baton this year, Mac
served 16 years as
Head Instructor for the L L Bean Fly Fishing Schools and
the author of the L
L Bean Fly Casting Handbook (Lyons Press). He is the fly
casting columnist
for American Angler magazine and his casting articles have
appeared in Fly
Fisherman and Saltwater Fly Fishing. He also was editor of
The Loop for four
years. Mac is a Board Certified Master Fly Casting
Instructor and an
emeritus member of the FFF Casting Board of
Governors.
Behind The Wizard's Curtain
(This presentation is
a teaching "model" with the capacity to meet various
student requirements. We
will examine a written casting curriculum design to
determine how its content
helps students meet with success. Each participant
will be provided with a
copy of the entire "Comfort Zone Casting" curriculum
on
CD)
David Diaz -will be coming tom us from his home in
Birmingham, AL. He has
presented casting clinics and teaching workshops for
the FFF South Eastern
Conclave and FFF's National Fly Fishing Shows.
His article in The Loop The
Roadmap for Certain Success is now used regularly
as a preparation guide for
the CCI exam by individuals, instructors, and in
schools. David is a Board
Certified Master Casting Instructor and
serves on our FFF Casting Board of
Governors where he chairs the Continuing
Education Committee for that body.
"For the first twenty years that I
fished with a fly rod I was a lousy
caster. Then, I paid for a
lesson from a Certified Fly Casting Instructor.
The improvement from that
lesson was instant, measurable, and gratifying.
It convinced me that the
instructor's contribution to the student was
enormous. I was so grateful to
the teacher that I have been returning the
favor ever since.
"
