    Gordy, Guy,

Excellent advice with respect to asking the examiner to assist with stretching the line prior to the distance cast.

That does bring up the question of why anyone would need to mark the end of the head of their line. Seems to me that it's obvious
    by the feel.

    Thanks again

Subject: Storm aftermath / Guy's question

    Walter & Group.........

    From Gary Davison (Houston) :-

    Hi Al,

We made it through the storm ok.  House is ok no broken windows or roof damage.  Messed the yard up big time had a lot of work to do there.  Some had worse due to big trees in the area.  Falling on the roofs and yards.  Big clean up for the last week here in this area.

Lost electrical power for 6 days.  Thank god for the Canadian Cold front coming down just in time to save our bacon.  Just got back electrical power tonight at 10:00 PM.  9/18/08.

Boy you do not know how much you take for granted  A major wake up call for all of us down here!  We really need to be thankful for electrical power and running water.

    All the best.

some of you might not know just what Ike did to Texas and the Carabean islands
The power is just getting back up in much of Texas. So much damage most are at a total loss. Like Gary no power means no cooking cooling or refredgeraton for food storage. No place to go to buy any. This is very hard to under go. or understand un less you have been through a major power outage.

    Al & Gary.......

I do feel for you folks.  I'm sure the other folks in our Group do, too.  After one hurricane, we were without power for 5 weeks ... no water for 8 days.  We were fortunate, however, in that I have an 18,000 Gal. cistern and a propane generator.  Helped my neighbors with water and electricity ..... ran 3 homes on that gen set.  Not enough power for air conditioning, but sufficient for all else.

Let's pray you get back in shape before long !!!

Guy  returns with a message clarifying his original question.  I now understand it much better.  My comments in his text in bold blue italics  G. :-

In regards to Walters comments on distance:

Instead of teaching people to mark lines to insure they get enough off the reel. Train them to ask the examiner to stretch their lines just prior to the task. I always ask the candidate if they want their line stretched. If they say yes, then I carry the end of the fly line at least 5 feet past the distance line and allow them to stretch their line. If they say no and the first attempt is too short to reach the line, you can bet they have sufficient line off the reel for the next two attempts. This is a non-starter argument, in my opinion, and feel that lines should not be marked.

Good advice, Guy !  I respect a candidate who asks me to do that.  I cannot imagine an examiner who wouldn't comply. G.

     In regards to tracking:

I guess my original request about this was misunderstood. Most of the comments here have been how to fix âthe problemâ that the candidate had in their cast. Since the candidate could easily make in plane casts, at will, a solution wasnât needed. He was capable of doing what was needed for the test. It was mostly that I noticed that the candidate would lapse into this off plane style when he was just casting for himself (I did try to make that clear in the original request to the group).  I felt it necessary to have him keep some thoughts in mind if he were going to use that style during the test.

I reminded him that examiners canât mark down because the candidate chooses to use a particular style for any of the test questions. Therefore he was free to use the off plane style. The problem was, as is evident by some of the comments here, many examiners might see this as a fault and not as a stylistic issue. In that case he could easily fail if he used the cast during the test.

I asked him what would happen if he were teaching a beginners class and one of his students noticed this. Would he be able to teach this style if asked?

If during the test he used the cast would he be able to explain how to accomplish it ?

I tried to warn him that using it was fine (in my opinion), but it may complicate the testing to his disadvantage. Since he seemed fully capable of casting in plane he might want to try to consciously do so for the test.

So ultimately what I was seeking was other bits of advice I may have given him in regards to the issue.

I highlighted Guy's final question to make it as clear as I could.   G.

COMMENT:   Here's the way I see it:  How do you help convert someone who is casting in an inefficient manner while fishing, etc. to the more efficient way of casting that he can do when teaching, doing a demo. or testing ?

1.)  Should you try to convert him at all ?

    2.)  If so, HOW ?

Another question on the table for you Masters :-

3.) How long did you take between being certified (CCI) and passing your MCCI exam ?

4.) Jeff Barefoot's question on the analogy between the actlon of a BOW and that of a FLY ROD.

5.)  Last question, from Jim Valle :

    Gordy and Group,

Since we have been on the subject  Masters continued learning, I believe âUnderstanding and Truth â will only come to each of us if we maintain an open mind and heart. I try to always be willing to consider a new or different point of view. So Iâll ask the question of Gordy and the Group.

When it comes to authors I have always given credit where credit is due. Mostly out of respect and appropriately âciting the sourceâ in order to avoid the misconception  that it is my original thought or concept.  As an instructor I also feel the obligation to give my students a little understanding and familiarity with the significant authors and concepts. Kind of like literature and Shakespeareâ..Bernoulli and flightâthe names and concepts go hand in handâ

I am certain in the speeches and lectures Gordy gives around the country on surgical issues, professionalism requires the appropriate credits. I am sure there are many other  professionals from a variety of fields in the group that could shed some light on this subject.

    Your Thoughts?

    Jim

    Gordy.
