Walter & Group.........
From Craig Buckbee :-
gordy,
i do not know if you remember this, and perhaps you were not present,
but 2 yrs. ago when Lefty, you, and JimV put on the casting clinic at
L+H woods, i commented to Lefty about his using the nail knot as line
indicator, saying that we should call it the BRAILLE KNOT. he thought
it a nifty idea and said that in his new knot book he would mention
this, "... from a guy from jersey city".
my one comment as to approaching a caster/fisherman that is casting
in an inefficient manner... be careful, think a bit about what YOU
feel is an efficient/inefficient casting method. i say this because
my take on what Guy had recently asked (having the front loop and
back loop under the tip) about is really not in agreement with what
was answered. it seems to me that the caster was using a sidearm, slightly underpowered cast... a cast that if there is no
problematic wind, a/o tailing loops being made, IS the most efficient
method of casting at times.

Craig .... Well, that speaks to what Jim Valle said ..... we have to be very careful before claiming a new cast, technique or even a knot or its use.
Now that you remind me, I DO remember that and Lefty's return comment. We were all together. The thing that put the spark of recollection into my brain was your term BRAILLE KNOT. That was, indeed, your term. Until someone comes up with a claim that he or she had invented it, I'm standing with you as the inventor.
(Now let's see if someone comes up with an ancient Guru in Beserkestan who thought of it first !)
On Guy's question: He has made it clear that he was more interested in the concept of an instructor making inefficient casts when not teaching and then being able to make great demo. casts when working with students..... not an analysis of the particular cast. I think Ally answered this quite well.
I agree with you when you say, "be careful.........". That caster may even be using a method which you or I haven't learned.
This brings up an interesting point. When observing someone casting in what I think is an inefficient manner, I NEVER offer correction unless asked. Some anglers understandably take offense when that is done.
Another point: I try not to judge the capability of a fly caster / angler on the basis of watching a cast or two. He/she may just be having a bad moment.... or a bad casting day (it happens to all of us)... or perhaps is trying out something novel.
In Guy's case, however, I understand that he was either testing or coaching this chap as a candidate. That is a very different matter.
