  • Spey: Matching lines to rods

    Walter & Group....

    From Ron Thomas:

    Hey Gordy,

I wanted to give Rick a little more information on the type of rod that I have...It is a TFO 8wt. 13’-6” 4pc. Professional “Skagit” series.  I hope this helps.

By the way, Rick hit the nail on the head with the comment that some shops sell two handed rods without a working knowledge of the type of lines designed for them.  When I purchased the rod online it would have been nice if there was a line recommendation for the type of rod used.

I’m not advocating any particular line manufacturer, but RIO has made the attempt with their line recommendation chart.  One thing I was not aware of when I purchased RIO’s Windcutter Spey line 7/8/9 for the rod above: the lines’ head is built on all three sizes. This particular size line has a body that is built from a 9wt., 8wt., and part of the 7wt.

Thanks for all of the help...

Rick Whorwood's answer, below, give a taste of the kind of reasoning which goes in to choice of lines for Spey:-

    Hi Gordy
It's a Skagit rod, call Rajeff Sports and order a Skagit line. I've not cast this rod so I can't say which line (a 7/8 or 8/9) would best suit it, but my guess would be the 8/9, going a bit heavier is always better then going lighter. I like the Airflo line over the Rio line, because the Airflo Skagit lines have a front and rear taper, better for turn over. Also you can use Airflo poly-leaders as tips for the Skagit line. This rod is designed to fish tips (winter Steelhead system). Hope this helps.
