Walter & Group.......
From Bruce Richards on the overpowered curve cast:
Hi Gordy, and Jeff,
Just back from teaching at the SE conclave. Mac Brown
was there and we
talked a bit about the curve/hook subject, I understand
better now, but
don't entirely agree (assuming I really do
understand!).
To make an overpowered sidearm curve there is no way to
avoid a significant
counterflex and rebound. And because we are throwing
hard, they are already
bigger than normal. These two motions will throw a
"bump" in the bottom
leg, but that will be pulled out by tension before the
loop opens. Mac
suggested that this process might increase top leg speed as
it happens,
which is true, but since we can't prevent it I don't view it as
something
we do to help make the curve. Mending just as the loop opens will
speed up
the turnover as the mend pulls on the bottom leg which increases
turnover
speed. And the mend better positions the bottom leg to accentuate
the
desired line position on the water. So, my thoughts are that we have
little
control over the counterflex/rebound, but can accentuate the curve
with any
sort of pull on the bottom leg, whether it be a mend or haul.
Mending has
the added benefit of better line placement.
And I would
like to see Jeff's plane demo sometime. My exposure to it at
this point was
the drawings he made a while ago which I wasn't ever able to
completely
understand. I know seeing it in action would clarify it quickly.
By the
way, Jindra and I administered the MCI test to Mac and he passed
easily this
time!

Your conclusions exactly parallel mine .... just different wording.
