    Walter/& Group.........

Answer  our pending question from Lewis Hinks :

Silly answer:  One with the wrong timing and one with the correct timing can make them both break the speed of sound, or crack.

Comment:  Not as silly as Lewis might have thought.  In fact, his answer is sneaking up on the target .

    From Pete Humphries....

    Hi Gordy,

    My answer to the leader, fly line, rod and bull whip;

They are all tapered.  Heavier mass turning over a lighter mass causing acceleration.

Pete...   YES.        Einstein's,  E = M x Vsquared,  where E is energy, M is Mass and V is velocity.  Energy remains until dissipated, so as mass decreases the velocity increases as its square.

While you are correct, there is even another way of looking at this .... we'll see if someone gets the idea.

    QUESTION ON THE DECK :

WHAT DO THE LEADER,  FLY LINE,  FLY ROD AND A BULL WHIP ALL HAVE IN COMMON ?

    Taper ( Mass Reduction )

See Bruce Richards, “Modern Fly Lines”, for a complete read and explanation… the function of the taper in all respects is to increase speed … where you cut it off and/or change the rate of taper,  is where the difference comes into  play…. Extend it out in a long delicate reduction (e.g. leader) and you will dissipate all the energy… thus a delicate presentation, Taper it some and then cut it off (to deliver speed and energy to the end) and a bull whip will crack as the tip breaks the sound barrier in its very abrupt change of direction… fly rods the tip obviously moves faster than the butt yielding a speed advantage to the flexible lever.

Might also consider reading Al Buhr’s booklet on making custom fly lines… there is a whole lot to learn here!

    Hope that helps

Jim.   Very true.   We still have another related concept in mind.       Gordy

    From Ron Thomas...

Good answer.  Gets even closer to the concept we had in mind      Gordy

    From Al Crise...

Great one word, "brief" answer.  Again, close on the horns of the concept.         Gordy

    From Steve Hollensed .....

Hi Gordy - they all have a tapered form.

Steve .... another correct answer.          Gordy

    From Jerry Puckett:-
    Gordy:

What do the leader, fly line, fly rod and a bull whip have in common?

The fly rod, fly line, and leader work as a unit, as does the bull whip, providing progressive smooth uninterrupted transfer of energy.

Jerry.... true, and gets even closer.        Gordy

Mac .....Another great and brief one word answer.              Gordy

I've picked what I think are the best answers.  Many more good ones and some not so on-target.

Rick Whorwood really came up with this question.  He has been teaching that each element of the system, the leader, the line, and the rod (as well as a bull whip)  has as its mass profile, a TRIANGLE.  When we put all these triangles together (leaving out the bull whip) we might even look at it as a compound compendium of Isosceles triangles all designed to perform in concert exactly as most of you have described, above.......  just another way of looking at the elephant !
