Walter & Group....
Advice from Guy Manning on finding out of print books:-
When
looking for an out of print book I always go here: http://www.alibris.com/
And
here: http://www.abebooks.com/
The
entries are made up of listings from used book stores and antiquarians. Adams
Angling is on Abebooks.com

We
are fortunate to have Bob Rumph in our Group. Here is his message on
finding out of print books:-
Hi Gordy & group,
I am in the process of making a list of
casting related books, most of which are on the suggested study list. These
books do not appear on my web-site. I will make this list available to you
probably next week. I have on that list Bruce's book "Modern Fly Lines" which
incidentally should be required reading for any Master candidate, it is
truly a "gem", albeit almost impossible to find and should definitely be
re-printed. The list contains about 45 book that I'm sure will be of interest to
members of the group. It also contains collectible casting books such as Jim
Green's "Fly Casting From the Beginning" and Gary Borger's "Presentation" which
is another book that just cannot be found. Also three books by Cliff Netherton,
Frank Steel's 1946 ed. of "Fly Fishing" (For Trout, Salmon, Bass and
Panfish), Bill Cairn's 1st ed. of "Fly Casting", John Alden Knight's 1942 1st
ed. of "Modern Fly Casting' with a pretty fair dust jacket considering the age.
And the list goes on...
Due to the fact that I am in the angling
books and literature business and get to see many books, I have made an
concerted effort to secure casting books in my searches to make available to the
group for their studies. As soon as I have the list finished, I will let
you (Gordy) know and those in the group who are interested may e-mail me
indicating their interest and I will send them the list along with the
prices.

From Al Crise:-
Howdy Gordy
Today I am getting my
reports ready for SOC board meeting this weekend. I will not be driving up
I have a show to do on Saturday.
Airplane wing the leading edge is
on the lower part to give the wing a long distance to reduce the pressure over
the wing.
I like the lever idea still
thinking on that. Do we effect the length we effect the speed of turn
over
For me the loop was a
change of planes Although still traveling away from a point (rod tip) it is
still mass moving so it has kinetic energy of it's own. Any point on that loop
is moving from ahead ( fly leg to apex of loop) or away from the rod
tip.
This motion does not have
to be anchored. The straighter the line the better the Kinetic Energy or more
concentrated.
Changing the direction of the fly
leg does not pull the Fly Leg.
I was doing some bead chain
casting on the floor just to be sure. Strange thing were happening the loop was
climbing from the straight line path. I am going to try to take some pictures of
this happening. Is the reduced fly leg causing less drag and the loop is pulled
upward?
Just for the fun of it grab some
of your fly tying bead chain and a pen clip the chain under the clip and on a
flat surface make some loops and see what happens.

Al.... I'll try the bead chain
exercise. Remeniscent of Ed Mosser's concept of the loop
forming as a manifestation of what was called, "coupled plane
pendula".....and the Mosser / Buchman Loop Kinematics Diagram (Reproduced in Don
Phillips' The Technology of Fly Rods, p. 90.) each of the beads representing one
of the, "segments".

From Jim Valle:-
Gordy
& Group,
As
a fellow Naval Aviator I would also agree with Phil’s description of a wing,
camber and Bernoulli’s principle. So we certainly don’t have a wing and
lift scenario.
Admittedly
there is a certain magical property of an unrolling loop which seems to defy
gravity.(Only seems that way, gravity is working on the loop and line all the
time).
There
is a bit of an illusion here.
I
don’t think it is flight in the form of lift but rather thrust exceeding drag …
on a tensioned line… (and I believe it is a lot of thrust compared to the little
bit of streamlined mass)
This
is fly casting not rocket science… of course …or is it?
My
2 cents

...... I don't know. Reminds me of a genius technician named
Bill Fowler of Miami, back in the early days of single sideband radio who worked
on the 2 meg. system for my boat to improve ship to shore transmission when
I fished the far outer reaches
of the Bahamas. He played with the crystals for hours. Did things
the other techs simply couldn't achieve. When I asked him how he did it,
he replied: " It takes a certain amount of whichcraft " !
