    Walter & Group.....

From Jim Valle on, "On the spot" demos:

    Gordy and Group,

Peter also led a group discussion/ Q&A re “Teaching the Physically Challenged”.

I will leave the subject to him as he is tremendously more qualified to teach us all and I suspect Peter will in the future become our specialist in this area.

Peter did advise us to #1) get to know your student first as a person.

Having Gordy there as an MD gave the discussion a realistic perspective.

    The bottom line for me was;

    Be Sincere

    Be Realistic

Then Adapt everything you ever learned to the student’s needs.

I’ll leave the rest to Peter, other than to say I was really gratified at the tremendous genuine interest by all attendees in this subject.

I don’t know if this is intrinsic to the fly fisherman, the Federation, the CI/MCI program or what …but..

You sure do meet some very fine people in this program.

Observations by Michael Gallert, MCCI Candidate :

    Gordie,

Thank you again for coming up to NJ ( a land, nearly barren, one lone MCI ) I appreciate reading your  digest of Lefty Kreh's visit. I sat front and center and watched and listened to Lefty.
I have given much thought to his concepts and teachings. There are interesting omissions in Lefty's language. At no time did Lefty mention: SLP, Slack, Stroke,Pause.
He focused on Speed & Stop and where the tip is at the stop. His words are different but the content is the same. If the caster gets all the line moving prior to the cast, they have controlled the slack. I usually use the term Power(ed) Portion(phase) of the Casting Stroke. I have cast, as we all do, or should try in Lefty's style. I find that the application of power does occur in just a portion of the stroke to maintain a SLP. The start of his cast is a long loading move( Joan's term) the finish is a "drift".
Last week I did a few casting Demos for an outdoor store. I finished with an 85' pick up and lay down cast, inspired by Lefty (his Baseball Cast).
I explained that the removal of Slack ,proper stroke length, application of power a long haul at midnight, a Stop with the tip pointing in the direction you want the line to go (180º from your target),coupled with a Pause. This is an effortless way to illustrate 5 essentials. No multiple false casts of continuous double hauls.

Yesterday I watched a casting lesson given by a local shop owner. He and his student didn't mind my audit. The teacher is not involved in the FFF Cicp, nor does he use Joan's Method. His language was not consistent with any published teacher or author that I was aware of. He did keep his student relaxed. He built confidence and suggested corrections to improve the casts.
I'm always learning an adding to my knowledge of instruction.

    Michael
