    ol Al....

Another one that used to be for salt water fly guides was the term, MEND.   Years ago, when a salt water guide asked his angler to "mend the line", he meant for him to strip in slack until the line and leader were straight.  Here in the Keys, so many guides are FFF trained, that you almost never hear that one any more.

Often a guide will get excited as a fish approaches his client's fly and he'll say, "STRIP!  STRIP!! STRIP!!!!!!"

What he really is looking for is for his client to take up the slack of his layout.  If the client doesn't do that, some fish...especially permit.... will take the fly, feel no resistance, and immediately spit it out with no hookup....whereas if the line and leader are straight, there is a high chance of a good hookup as soon as the fish takes the fly.  Of course, it would be ideal for the client to have a nice, neat and straight layout at the end of the cast in the first place.

In N.E. salt waters, what is called a "two handed retrieve" is termed an, "albie retrieve"....since that is often used for catching false albacore.

More salt water fly fishermen and guides are using what were considered strictly terms used for fresh water fishing......such as, "dead drift".  Years ago, a salt guide would say something like, " Cast and let it go".

In fly casting for as long as we have been teaching one of the problems was Terminology. If you are fly fishing and learned to cast in Montana then went to the Florida Keys, things like this would happen.
The guide would say "Bone at 11:00 o'clock Dump cast out at 50 ft." You would turn around a say "WHAT is a DUMP CAST?" as the fish swam off to even deeper waters...
If you take lessons from a FFF instructor We all need to use the same terms. Today there is a committee working on terms we use. There are some posted on a UK site that work in Europe. Here is a list that might help some of us speak the same language. Now this is not a Set in Stone list it is just a workable list that will work until the "Official List of FFF Terms".
