    Peter...

    You'll make a good Master !

I have heard the same thing about those taimen.

I have fished for large Atlantic salmon in Norway......beautiful big fish.  Unfortunately they were, "wimps" with very poor fighting ability.  The only fly that worked was an ugly 5" long treble hook tube fly tied up with black bear hair !!!  These fish were very close to the fiord and bright, with sea lice....not fish that were dark as having been in the river a long time, and not kelts ("black salmon") which were spawned out.

Tremendous difference when compared to the excellent fighting ability of the salmon of the Canadian Maritimes !!!!  The little landlocked salmon of Maine fought very well, too, compared with those of the Laerdal in Norway.

To be fair in my judgement, I should point out that we only fished that one river.  Other rivers there may have had better fighting strains of salmon.

Those little landlocked fish were the best jumpers.  Very acrobatic.  Made up for the small size.

I rated the Scottish salmon as reasonably good fighters.....but still nowhere near as feisty as the Canadian ones.

Hi Gordy... I've decided to make a concerted effort to go for my Masters whenever that may be. Just wanted to let you know my focus and looking foward to seeing you all next week.
Had lunch with Wallace yesterday and showed me some photos of 60lb. taimen trout he caught in Mongolia.Said  they hardly fought and was disappointing. So much for those megabuck trips! I've been sending him choice mail of the group and is looking foward to meeting you hopefully in the fall.    Peter
