    On Grip from Walter Simberski:-

Gordy - This probably isn't new for some people but I haven't seen/heard it before. I was doing one of those Mel Kreiger, "snap the bloody rod in half" exercises.
Basically, waving a rod back and forth side arm, with a lot of force and with no line on the rod to get a feel for its action. I changed my grip during the exercise
and had an immediate difference in the feel of the rod and the control I had with the new grip. I tried a number of grip styles after that and found that one of
the grips gave a distinctly better feel of control and power - especially at maximum deflection and rebound. The rapid flex-conterflex action made it obvious to
me which grip I should be using with that particular rod - especially for distance casting. One of the other grips had a good feeling of control until maximum
deflection was reached and then began to feel weak.

Seems to me that this would be a good way to help someone identify which grip (or grips) would be preferable for a given rod and caster and fishing activity.

    Walter....

Different grips for different rods and different casts as well as different fishing conditions.  OK....attests to change in Style to suit changing conditions.

Yes.  I think that comment, "snap the bloody rod in half" came from Mel's video, THE ESSENCE OF SPEY CASTING.

The idea may have come from somewhere else.....but in reading Hugh Falkus' book , SPEYCASTING A NEW TECHNIQUE, I note that he calls attention to many Spey rod breakages due to the tremendous torgue applied by some casters....and forming a reason to tape the ferrules.
