Jim Laing sent me a 5000 word article by fly casting/flyfishing Guru of yore....Peter Schwab.  (I'll forward that to you once I figure out how to forward attachments on this new system.)

    Jim....

I hadn't seen that one before.  A piece of fly casting history. THANKS !!!

As Peter Schwab opined way back then, it's the matching of the rod to the physical ability of the caster to yield high line (loop) speed while still being in complete control of the loop which is most important for distance casting.

Especially interesting to me as I began to fly fish back in the 1930's and became familiar with the old method of classifying fly lines, prior to the change made in 1962 by the AFTMA.

The fundamental difference between the two methods is that prior to the change, fly lines were always  classified by letter code ACCORDING TO DIAMETER.  After it, they have since been classified ACCORDING TO THE GRAIN WEIGHT OF THE FIRST 30 FEET OF THE LINE.

One book I feel is an absolute MUST for reading is Bruce Richard's, MODERN FLY LINES.......  In particular because most of us now agree with Peter Schwab that the fly line is the heart of the system.

I suddenly realized that I left that out of the list of books I recommended despite the fact that I feel it's one of the most important for MCI candidates.
