Dr. Shigley,
I woud have to disagree with your comments on the FT/XXD match up. The FT in
5-7 weights with the XXD is one of my favorite matches. I have a good amount
of experience with the Cabelas equipment and with the XXD lines and have found
them to be very compatible with good distances attainable.
I would say that the FT has a slight soft spot when hitting distance and
carrying 70-80 feet of line (shooting to over 100). This is hightened by a
caster using to much power in the stroke, often creating a large tail
and pile.
If a caster is using to much power with this rod (as with most any rod) it can
and often does end in a less than desirable outcome.
As you have mentioned the flex of a rod is subject to the MFG and there is no
hard and fast data they all follow to quantify how a fast 6wt would flex.
It sounds as though you are working very hard, I would recommend cutting back
the power being used and work on the technique. The double haul is a very
effective accessory to the cast and when used properly it shoud not put more
force on the body, but actually divide the force needed to make the cast
bewteen the arms and make the cast easier, taking the majority of the
force off
of the casting arm.
I have inlcuded a piece written about distance casting that will offer some
suggestions for practice to lessen the amount of power used and improve the
technique.
Keep up the good work and long casts!!!!

As most of you know, Jeff is a true champion distance caster. He has given a great workshop on distance casting at the last couple of Conclaves.
I agree with his comments.
