    Subject: Fly line questions

    Hi, Group....

Some minutiae questions on fly lines:-

1.) How great an advantage is gained by having a very stretchy line for distance casting ?

It depends on what the elastic qualities are. Much like a fly rod the stretch could assist in distance casting if there was sufficient potential to kinetic energy transfer was significant. If the line were to stretch but then recover very slowly it would actually be a detriment to casting. Although if the line were to stretch during false casting this would lower the density of the line and effectively underline the rod. Short answer - yes.

2.)  What is a density compensated fly line ?

A sinking fly line designed with maximum density at the head and progressively less density as you move up the line. The permits the line to sink in a straight line from the rod tip to the fly rather than developing a belly in the line as it sinks.

3.)  Does the TT line (Triangle taper) have a convex compound forward taper, a compound concave taper, or a strictly progressive forward taper ?

    Strictly progressive.

4.)  If I buy and weigh several Cortland and Scientific Anglers WF fly lines, will I find that they all have approximately the same weight range for the first 30 feet if the stated designation on the package is WF7F ?

Define approximate. By definition they should be the same for the first thirty feet with minor variation. Some line manufacturers (SA) will actually make the line slightly heavier (closer to a 7 and 1/2 weight) because this will slow down the action of the rod slightly and make a fast rod feel more natural to many casters. Cortland now sells lines in actual half weight increments.

5.) Can you name 3 different fly lines which have no belly ?

Level, dual taper (although you could argue that this is a very long belly),  triangle taper

6.) I am casting with 50' of an XXD, WF6F fly line out of my rod tip.  What weight fly line am I actually handling ?

WF6F XXD is fairly uniform thickness after the front taper to the end of the rear belly, a total of 45 feet, followed by a 20 foot rear taper. Approximate weight of the line would be 50/30 times weight of a 6 weight line or about 267 grains. Somewhere between the equivalent of a 9 and 10 weight line.

7.)  My student shows up with a 5 wt rod.  He's placed a WF7F line on it. How much line should he have out of the rod for easy false casting ?

    To properly load the road about 140/185 * 30 = 22.7 feet.

9.)  In 1962, the AFTMA came up with the present method of designating fly lines by the grain weight of the first 30 feet.  What is the PRIMARY difference between this method of measuring fly lines and the former method which was stated in letters ?

The older method was based on line diameter.

    10) Can you tell me one disadvantage of a fly line which has a gel spun core of Spectra ?

Spectra can stretch and not recover.

    11)  I just bought a full sink WF 10 S, TYPE  VI fly line.

a.) What does WF 10 S mean ? Weight Forward, 10 weight, sinking

b.) What is meant by, "TYPE VI" ? Defines the sink rate but there is no standard for sink rate.

    12.) What is a ST 9 ST line ?

Shooting taper, 9 weight, sink tip

13.)  Are silk fly lines still available ?

    Yes

14.)  Your student tells you that his backing is made of Cuttyhunk.

a.) What is this material ?

    Woven linen

b.) Can you tell him its advantages and disadvantages ?

Linen tends to rot easily and may require waxing.

Woven linen doesn't twist as easily.

15.)  Another student has loaded his reel with nylon monofilament backing.  Is there any disadvantage to this ?

Monofilament can snarl easily. Also some real manufacturers will not honor their warantees if they find you've used monofilament backing because if wound on reel tightly the induced stretch (and resulting contraction) can damage the reel.

16.)  What is the function of the rear taper of a fly line ?

Controls the energy transfer from the running line to the belly in loop formation.

17.)  What is a CRT fly line ?

    Got me there...
