Hi, Gav.....
By now you may have gotten Bob's answers.
You have added some more good ones.
Now on those yellowfin:
Wouldn't you rather fight a big yellowfin on a SHORT rod with good lifting power for the butt section ?

Gordy.
1)
1) Long Rod ? Keeps flyline higher above the ground when false casting
- mend a lot more line
- rollcast further
The negative is that the rods feel heavier in the hand when actually casting. I guess this is due to the lever principal as the fulcrum is further away from the casting hand. When fighting fish close to the boat they can become a bit ungainly.
2) Short Rod ? Timing during Casting tends to be more critical as rod loads faster and unloads faster
- in a small stream takes up less room ? remembering you still have line in the air
- Good fish fighting especially close to the boat and when pumping fish from down deep
a) The rod is a lever so the longer the lever the more power you can develop during the casting stroke
b) The longer the lever the more power you need to put in get maximum leverage, so there?s a point where the rod can be too long
c) wading the flats and sitting in a float tube/ canoe
d) dredging for yellowfin in a burley trail
Lefty?s trick ? break the rod down and just use a section of the rod
Effective Rod Length ? A rod length long enough to effectively cast the line to the target with control
Only a guess
as to who said it first ? couldn?t even guess
I have read it but will have to hit the books again here?s a guess ? The Cast and Casting Angles
Always great to get your quiz ? most of the time I just don?t have the time to participate. I look forward to everyone elses ?Right Answers ?
Have a great, safe and prosperous Chrissy/New Year with all your family.

Hi, Group....
A mini-quiz:
1.) List as many advantages and disadvantages of long vs. short fly rods.
2.) Lefty once wrote, " The longer the fly rod, the more it helps you make the cast."
a.) List any thoughts you may have in support of that statement.
b..) What, if any, are the limitations of that statement.?
c.) Give a fishing circumstance where a 10' single handed fly rod might be preferable to an 8 1/2' rod.
d.) Can you think of a fishing circumstance where a 5' long fly rod might be best ?
e.) Lefty taught us a trick to solve the problem of the angler out on the stream in just such a, "short rod circumstance" as in, d.) who finds himself with only a 9' rod at his disposal. (His short rod is 2 miles back at the car !)
What is Lefty's trick ?
3.) Can you come up with an accepted definition of, EFFECTIVE ROD LENGTH ?
4.) Who first described this ?
5.) Name two books in which this is described.
