a resounding, YES.
In fact, making that strip just before the loop straightened did the trick just fine. One term some use to describe that is, "CHECK HAUL".
I do that if I'm fishing with an intermediate sink line and then we pole after fish in very shallow water. By starting the strip before the fly hits the water, it sort of makes an intermediate line into a floater.....as long as you don't stop stripping.
One can solve it to some extent, too, by going to a clear-tip front taper line and shortening the leader. I didn't have one set up at the time.

Off the top of my head and in the heat of battle, I would cast early, try to make the end of the fly line end up where I wanted the fly to be and take a long strip to straighten my retrieve.

Subject: FISHING/CASTING PROBLEM
Group...
I had an interesting casting challenge, today.
We were staked out for tarpon. The fish required a very long distance cast directly into the wind. Best takes were on a bulky, "fuzzy" fly on a 2/0 hook. We needed long leaders because of a high clear sky.
Problem was that while it was easy to make those long casts, it was difficult to turn over that big wind resistant fly. Often the fly would land right at the end of the fly line. It, then, took several strips to straighten out the leader. By then, the tarpon had gone beyond it, yielding no strike.
We DID figure out a simple solution to the problem.
QUESTION: WHAT WAS OUR SOLUTION ?
