Good morning, Gordy
Glad to see you made it home. I'm guiding the next two
days, and wanted to get this in.
Ken Cole
QUESTIONS:
1.) WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF STYLE ? How the individual
executes the elements of the cast. YES. OTHER WAYS OF
LOOKING AT IT....STYLE IS MAKING THE BEST OF THE CASTER'S ANATOMY.....OR (AL
KYTE), "SELF OPTIMIZATION".
2.) LIST AS MANY THINGS AS YOU CAN
WHICH WOULD BE ELEMENTS OF STYLE (SUCH AS CHOICE OF GRIP). Grip, stance, wrist,
shoulder and elbow movement, body rotation, arm motion, elbow position.
AGREE.
3.) DESCRIBE, BRIEFLY, THE STYLES OF:
a. Joan Wulff. Elbow out front, vertical arm path. OK.....VERTICAL ROD PLANE.
b. Bruce Richards. Elbow high and out, rotates arm at the
shoulder. YES
c. Jerry Seim. I've never seen Jerry cast, but I heard it
described as low elbow , off-vertical arm path. NO ! CHECK OUT THE
ANSWER IN AL KYTE'S ARTICLE ON STYLE IN THE MASTER STUDY
GUIDE.
d. Lefty Kreh. Low elbow, horizontal arm path. OK...OFF- HORIZONTAL ROD PLANE.
4.) BRIEFLY, DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SUBSTANCE AND STYLE.
Substance = the elements (essentials) of the
cast. YES.
Style = how the caster performs those
elements. I'D ACCEPT THAT.
5.) WHEN, IF EVER, WOULD YOU CHANGE A
STUDENT'S STYLE ?
a. Hinders progress
b. Scenario calls for a
change. AGREE WITH
ALL THESE. ANOTHER REASON FOR CHANGING HIS/HER STYLE IS WHEN THERE IS A
TASK WHICH CAN'T BE WELL ACCOMPLISHED WITH THAT STYLE.
c. Style is Injurious or hazardous.
6.) WHEN, IF EVER, WOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR STYLE
?
Teaching:
a. Demonstration purposes. YES
b. Communication has broken down. (NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN)
c. Student is not progressing. PERHAPS
d. Student age and/or sex. YES. (WHEN TEACHING AND DEMONSTRATING FOR VERY YOUNG CHILDREN, FOR
EXAMPLE, I OFTEN GO TO USING 2 HANDS ON A SINGLE HANDED ROD.)
Casting:
e.a. Hinders progress YES
b. Scenario calls for a change. YES. FOR EXAMPLE, JOAN WULFF ACTUALLY SWITCHES TO A
LEFTY-LIKE STYLE WHEN I HAVE HER CASTING TO TARPON FROM THE DECK OF MY SKIFF AND
THE WIND IS HOWLING. MY STYLE IS SIMILAR TO LEFTY'S WHEN FISHING THE FLATS
IN THE TROPICS. I'LL CHANGE TO A BRUCE RICHARDS STYLE IF FISHING A RIVER
FOR SALMON CHEST DEEP IN WADERS. I'LL OFTEN USE JOAN'S STYLE WHEN I NEED
PIN-POINT ACCURACY ON A TROUT STREAM.....POINT IS THAT ONE MAY ELECT TO CHANGE
STYLES TO SUIT THE FISHING CIRCUMSTANCES.......BUT THE ESSENTIALS REMAIN
UNCHANGED.
c. Style is Injurious or hazardous. YES.
NICE JOB, KEN !
