  • RE: History of fly fishing

    Hi, Al...

I'm back to the e-messages, now. Just finished having my fishing club at my home for the past weekend.

Best catch was Bob Andreae's 25 lb. tarpon on a skinny flat.... 7 wt. with a 10 lb. tippet. Fishing was slow because of fierce water temperatures of 90 to 97 degrees F.

Al....thanks for this site. I've read the whole thing.

A lot of this history of fly fishing.....and more, is in Vol. I. of Ernie Schwiebert's, TROUT. I'm going to order the books, anyway.....since there may be some tidbits of info that I haven't run across before.

The chapter on Greenwell's Glory brought back an old memory. I was salmon fishing with one in Scotland several years ago on the Tay, out of Aberfeldie. I made a bad back cast and broke it off in a thicket of high tangled privet hedge. I continued fishing with another fly, while my ghillie spent the last 2 hours of the afternoon trying to find the darned thing. At the end of the day, he said to me, "Don't worry, laddy, I have the day off tomorrow, and I'll find it for you" (!!!)
