Peter;
I was kind of joking about the back hand Galway cast ? but just wanted to make you think a little.
GOOD ! DOES MAKE ONE THINK.
I agree with Gordie on a Double Haul is hauling in both directions; I believe that is the latest consensus.
On loading the TCR; I didn?t know if you were asking about the line for taking the exam, or fishing.
I'D USE THE XXD OR THE RIO "LONGCAST" FOR THE EXAM....BECAUSE IT DOES ALL THE TASKS WELL.
I gave you my opinion for the examination.
For angling ? in tropics, I use the Wulff Bermuda line, and the same as the rod size.
Another tip if you use the Wulff TT lines, is to cut about 5? off the front taper right where it starts to step up. I have had trouble turning over flies at any distances with the standard taper. It also loads better at short distances.
A RESOUNDING YES . ALL TRIANGLE TAPERS HAVE THE MARVELOUS CAPABILITY OF YIELDING GENTLE PRESENTATIONS. THIS, HOWEVER, YIELDS THE TRADE-OFF DISADVANTANGE OF MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT TO TURN OVER AND HANDLE LARGER SALT WATER FLIES AND, ESPECIALLY, HEAVY WEIGHTED ONES LIKE CLOUSERS. CUTTING THE TIP BACK ELIMINATES SOME OF THAT PROBLEM, BUT THE REMAINING TAPER IS STILL A GENTLE ONE, SO THAT'S NOT AS GOOD A SOLUTION AS SIMPLY USING A LINE WITH A SHORTER/STEEPER TAPER TO BEGIN WITH, IN MY HANDS.
My understanding of the XXD lines is; beyond 30?, it starts to add line sizes quite fast, thus overloading some rods. The TCR rod has a fast ? stiff ? tip and will handle it better than most rod actions.
YES, INDEED! THAT'S BECAUSE THESE LINES HAVE A 50' PLUS BELLY....SO EVERY 5' OF ADDITIONAL LINE GIVES YOU ONE SIZE HEAVIER LINE DESIGNATION. WHEN YOU FINALLY GET OUT TO CARRY 50' OF LINE YOU ARE 20' PAST THE FIRST 30' FOR WHICH THIS LINE WAS RATED....THAT MEANS YOU ADD 4 MORE LINE WEIGHTS....WHICH HAS YOU CASTING WITH A 13 WT. LINE IF YOU STARTED WITH A 9 WT. ROD FITTED WITH A 9 WT. LINE !
YOUR TCR ROD CAN HANDLE THAT.....BUT MANY OTHER RODS BECOME OVERLOADED WITH THAT SCENARIO.
If I understand Gordie, it would be better - in fishing conditions to undersize the XXD with the TCR.
YES.
But to summarize, the Wulff TT and the XXD aren?t good quick saltwater casting lines, nor have the tropic properties.
CORRECT RE THE XXD. I JUST DON'T KNOW IF THE BERMUDA SW WULFF TT LINE HAS A UV SUNSCREEN......EITHER WAY, IT'S JUST NOT GOOD FOR THE SW QUICK CASTS SO OFTEN NEEDED.
I will try not to joke with you ? lol
HEY.......JOKES ARE FUN !

Peter....
I'll be interested in Tom's answer as well.
My take:
1.) All these are good lines and have models built for tropic use with a UV filter in the coating. I'd also add the Cortland, TROPIC PLUS lines.
In casting the TCR with the Airflow, DELTA-POLYFUSE, I found that it handled well. For average use, I'd have a tough time choosing between the others....a matter of personal preference.
I find that loading the TCR rods with one size lighter line works great for long casts, and OK for short ones, too. If I were in need of mostly short, " quick casts"....as for tarpon which suddenly appear just a few feet away, I'd load it with the size to match the rod......even one size greater.
Gordy
2.) On the Galway cast, I'd look at it as the double haul.

Hi Tom... You guys are busy with your mail and getting ready for Nov. In case you haven't heard Bob and I will both be there and looking foward to helping out in any way we can. We'll be arriving Wed. evening 11/16th I have a couple of ? for both of you. With the TCR Sage rod what would be your all around 1st choice of floating line for the tropics ...TT,SA,Sage or Airflow...other? I'm hearing a lot of guides preferring the TT.
On the galway cast when you haul with 2 forward cast would that be a single or double haul? Thanks..Peter
