Jim....
Walter had suggested that one, too. As I reflect upon this and the additional info you sent, I believe he is right.
Scrolling down, I see you have also provided some other fly fishing works which are valuable, too ! I'll pass this on to the Group.

Casting
The traditional (clock face) approach to casting tuition is well
illustrated in the Hardy booklet (unfortunately no longer in print)
but many of the same diagrams can be found in the book by Buller and
Falkus. Lefty Kreh has a refreshingly different approach, which is
worthy of study. Mackenzie-Philps gives detailed instruction with
many useful photographs to illustrate points. The Tomlinson book
(1984) is dated in appearance and layout but the techniques are
sound whilst the 1987 book contains many of the same photographs and
similar text at a much reduced cost. The Marshall book contains many
practical diagrams to assist in the construction of the line,
together with diagrams illustrating stance and line loops.
The small booklet by Jim Green is a gem, containing some concise
instruction about casting and lots of useful fishing information in
addition. Unfortunately it is out of print.
I have included the Gallwey book as I am sure that the principles
which he applies to improving performance in tennis can equally well
be applied to casting.

The book by Falkus is probably the best of the bunch, but Crawford
Little is definitely worth reading. Waddington encourages the use of
the type of fly named after him. Grant is a less well known name,
but he has a systematic approach.

Peter Mackenzie Philps is an entertaining yet instructive read.
Cove's book has some good diagrams for tying knots but otherwise I
find the tone unfortunate. Gordon Fraser's book is a diametrically

Flies
John Robert's Dictionary contains 28 colour plates illustrating many
of the fly dressings described, and the book which he edits contains
some interesting patterns from contributors distributed round the
globe. Mackenzie-Philps' book contains poor quality photographs
which rather ruin the book. For traditional salmon flies the Mikael
Frödin book with its colour illustrations and background information
is an excellent reference.

Fly Tying
Jacqueline Wakeford's book is the one that I constantly use for
reference. Kolbu gives some tips on crocheted bodies, and in the
same book Espersen illustrates the 'Stewart' method of hackle tying.
Fling is a bit laboured, repetitively illustrating how to tie a
half-hitch, yet never showing a whip-finish tool technique. But the
illustrations are generously sized!

Fishing Knots
Many of the general fishing books devote a few pages to fishing
knots. There are general books about knots (eg. Winch) but books
about specific knots that apply to fishing are few and far between.
One of these is the book by Vare, which contains black and white
photographs of how to tie the knots and a line diagram of the
finished product.
In the general fishing books by Buller & Falkus, Falkus, Wheat, and
Cove there are some good clear diagrams (especially in Cove) of a
restricted range of knots.
The book by Budworth illustrates a vast range, including knots
relating to boats, which may well be of interest to anglers. The
Brockhampton is a cheap and cheerful little book, again with a
special section of Angling knots.
The book by Winch gives detailed practical advice on the production
of a Turk's Head Knot - which has many applications for the angler.
It exemplifies a dying art of using the most basic materials to
provide simple, practical solutions - a radically different approach
than that adopted by today's technology.

Biology & Entomology
The book by Drummond Sedgwick gives details of salmon farming
techniques. Norman gives biological details of many fish including
the trout. Dr Smith's book is full of veterinary jargon but
nevertheless it is fascinating to dip into and explore the data
which predominantly relates to the salmonoids.
Prof Romer's book is a bible for students of comparative anatomy,
and contains some interesting small sections on fishes.

Cooking Trout and Salmon
Delia Smith's 1982 book is a classic in its own right, but has few
recipes for cooking these fish. Book 2 contains a section (p 40-64)
devoted to the cooking of fish. The latest book (2003) deals with
recipes exclusively for fish, including a large section (41-69) on
trout and salmon. Pat Hayes' book promoted by the British Trout
Association, is all embracing and covers almost every conceiveable
way of preparing a trout or salmon. Nick Nairn's book has an
extensive range of recipes but personally I would increase the
cooking times a touch. Jamie Oliver's book contains an interesting
recipe on page 136 (Whole Roasted Salmon Wrapped in Herbs and
Newspaper).

General
Fishing Places
By their nature, fishing haunts are liable to change, so that by the
time a book is published the information can be out-of-date and
misleading. Pawson's book is a useful reference if you are venturing
abroad and want some general idea of what to expect in fishing terms
in a certain area. Bingham paints a gloomy picture and I found
Ogborne's book not very useful.

not interested in piscatorial activities.

General Reference
For all freshwater fishing the book by Buller and Falkus takes some
beating. The Rev Houghton's book is a classic, with some
old-fashioned commentaries but contains beautiful illustrations by
A.F. Lydon. Jardine's book is a good all round read for a
fly-fisher, and contains some wonderful illustrations.
