Peter.....
Do NOT go
on the cheap for a large capacity reel for BFT's !!!!! That would be a big
mistake. The Gulfstream has been fine for me on those fish as well as
billfish. Perhaps if you really wanted to land a record bluefin tuna, the
Pacific or Bluefin models might give you a slightly better chance......but isn't
necessary for most big pelagics. This is especially true when you
dramatically increase linear capacity with Spectra backing, because of its
incredible strength/diameter ratio. (In a way, that stuff turns a small
reel into a larger one !) Using that concept, I've landed 100 lb plus
tarpon on an Everglades model, which is a LOT smaller.
As you probably know, Jake Jordan....who has had a mountain of
experience fly fishing for large numbers of Pacific sailfish prefers the
Charlton reels. I have heard a rumor that these are not being produced any
longer......but haven't checked this out.
Happy to hear that you had no damage to the Estero home !

Gordy... thanks for the update.. have been thinking of both you
and Bob and hope all is A-OK in both locations...We were luckier and did not
sustain any damage to our place in Estero. Lost power but it was
regained Tues. and our tenant reports that all is fine..Just had to close down
the golf course for a couple of days!!! All boats there were fine which was
good to hear as we are well protected from both the east and west. If you're
still around this weekend maybe we could get together. I'll call you Fri.
evening before we go out...
Your last few historical pieces
were a hoot...great stuff and I fowarded them to Rod and Wallace...Rod so much
enjoyed seeing you again. I just received my new TF 12wt which will be a good
back up tarpon rod as well as for BFT. Would a Gulfstream be adequate or is
there another less expensive reel that you could recommend. Talk to you today
or tomorrow... Peter

Hi, Peter....
Just to let you know that there is still now elec. power in South
Fla.......and they tell us it may not return for weeks. Despite that,
there IS power in Marathon and some of the lower Keys, though not Big
Pine.....so we'll probably have it on Big Pine in a matter of days.
Our momentary problem is that we can't get fuel as we drive through
Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade....so I don't have enough range to get home,
yet. (I would have been able to do that had I kept my old diesel
GMC.)
So we'll stay at Amy's until I figure a way around that problem.
One possible solution, is to rent a trailer to carry cans of fuel from
here.
Fishing since the Nor'Easter has been zero.....even in areas where we
had done so well before the storm. The bait left, and so did the
fish.
