Once, several years ago, Bob Andreae and I were fishing a pristine river in Alaska.....no hint of man living up river anywhere. I did, "taste" and drank the crystal clear water......and came down with Giardiosis. ("Beaver Fever" to some.)
I lubricate all my knots with saliva.....works fine.
For those really fastidious folks, there are several brands of knot lubricants which are very good for this purpose. Just about every fly fishing catalog and fly shop carries these.
The stuff is NOT, "knot glue". That's a controversial material which may really add little or nothing to a well chosen and expertly tied knot.

Howdy Gang,For years I would tell my students i.e. Boy Scouts, to 'WET the knot'. To help them remember I would say"Taste it, to be sure it is tight" Today I can no longer tell my students to put the line/knot in their mouth.It is sad to say that our waters have become so polluted that this simple way of wetting a knot might do some serious damage to them. So I tell them to wet the knot. You are near the water? Or you can spit on the knot. Yea that is not just the best way to say it to a group of ladies or young girls. To say nothing of snotty nosed kids, Have you ever see a Texan Spit? Thinking about this it might be fun to fine out.So my question is just what can we do to moisten the knot to cool and lubricate it before tightening?ol Al
