    Jerry...

Perfect day, today.....warmer and sunny.  Found some water which had scum and weeds from the recent weather front, and tried the, "soap-suds-soup" method for my line.

    Worked fine !

Jeff and Gordy, My experience in fishing in the Everglades Mangroves on my own without cleaning the line was that whatever was in the water did a good job of dirtying the line making casting harder and more work in relatively short periods.  With the dish soap casting all day eliminated cleaning and felt like the line had just been cleaned each time it was cast.  One thing that I think important to mention is casting and stripping all day into this solution was rough on the fingers cutting and drawing blood if one did not have protection of some kind on the fingers of the line hand.  I used adhesive tape.  Sounds like a odd combination but it did work all day each day.  The mixture of dish soap and water was just enough to see a few small soap bubbles.  This felt slippery all day. Capt Bert had one line he had used for five years so I lean toward minimum harm if any toward the fly line.  Gordy thanks to going to the trouble to try this and I look forward to your opinion.

Speaking of style Capt Bert had developed a strong side arm cast using mostly wrist with some elbow and shoulder movement in support, a very control and strong whip action.  Boom, there goes the fly right on target!  While my initial observation was that he could have used a little more range of moton in the shoulder and elbow I kept my mouth shut because his casting was art and poetry in motion nailing every cast under and through the Mangroves.  No way would I recommend messing with his very successful style of casting and I practice it regularly in my quest to be an all around master Caster. Goes back to what Tom White said,  you can use as much wrist as you wish as long as you have a straight line path of the rod tip.  Watching Bert on a sunny day in the Mangroves is the stuff of poems.  My thought was when I can cast as good as Bert in the mangroves then we will talk style and casting mechanics.  This made me respect how each person finds what works best for them and Capt.Bert can hang in there with the best of them and is a great guide to experience the everglades in all its dimensions.  He would make a great casting Instructor in my opinion.  He has that kind and patient personality.

Bert just jump on in if you want to add anything you will be talking to a sterling group of people eager and ready to learn.  Thanks to all concerned. Jerry

I have been of the same opinion, but I don't want to go against the idea without actually trying it.
For one thing, when fishing in SW Florida, one rarely uses dry flies, and the floatability of the line isn't critical.  For most of my fishing around mangroves, I use an intermediate line........but that's my personal choice...not shared by the majority.
Then, too, they are stripping line into the soap-"soup" which may be dilute enough to keep cleaning any residue as they fish so it doesn't build up.
I'm going out later today to play with this idea.  I may very well learn something.
"Don't knock it if you haven't tried it" just might apply.

I want to be very clear that I am not challenging the idea of using the soap because I have never tried this method.  I am confused though.  I would be concerned that the soap on the [floating] line while it is being fished would break surface tension and sink it. Or maybe even attract dirt if left on. I was under the impression that after cleaning all traces should be rinsed off.

Gordy here is the response from Capt.Barkus.  Everytime I have fished with him I have never had to worry about dirt and the casting all day was for the most part without friction.  Jerry

Jerry, All I use is a little dishwashing soap in the bottom of the bucket, but I put in a small piece of foam, the same size as the inside of the bucket so you can stand up the rod in the bucket, and the soapy water doesn't get on the reel, but allows the soapy water to stay just above the top of the foam liner, and all that touches the water is the very end of the fly rod,and the fly line  when your unhooking the fish.
My temp. trailer arrived yesterday, going to Florida tomorrow for a week to get is set up for sue and I.
    Take care,
    Bert

Bert, I am in an e-mail group for Casting Instructors coordinated by Dr.Gordon Hill in Big Piney Key.  I mentioned that you had a cleaning agent in a small plastic container to keep the line clean all day to combat the dirt and slime accumlating on the lines as we fished.  If you would like to comment on this I will make sure it gets to all concerned and they will know a great Captain they can call for fishing the Everglades. Hope you have recovered from the Hurricane.  Thanks Jerry Puckett
